Part Throttle Kick Down ?

Part Throttle Kick Down ? - 02/29/24 01:17 PM

Can the 1971 style part throttle Kick Down unit be install on a 1967/68 Valve Body ? I don't want to replace the current VB ( I put a simple shift kit in it not long ago ). Has anyone used the early style slant 6 PTKD ? which type works better for a low powered 318 driver with 3.23 gears ? Just learned about the early style PTKD, can't find much information about them.

You can get a slant 6 one. My trans guy had one on the shelf for thirty years that he gave me and put in the last trans he did for me before he retired. Said he knew it would come up one day, I was literally the last one he did as I didn’t know he was already done and he did several for me over the years.

A and A sells a version, it’s about a hundred bucks. I just got one last month for when I get a chance to drop the vb on my current car. I appreciate Rick making these available as finding an old slant one would be a task.

Either the late or early PTK module will work on a '67-'68 VB. Difference is the '71-later has a limit valve that won't be operational on a pre-'71 so both will work the same.

It limits PTK to about 40 mph. Earlier PTK had no limit, it would sometimes still PTK at 60 mph. The '71-later module needs to sense throttle pressure and there is no sense port in the pre-'71 VB.

How does gear ratio affect that? I'm running 4:10's but find the need for a PTK around town.

thanks for the info on this.
i never paid attention to the speed the PTK kicked in on all the vehicles i have had over all these years.
just shows an "old dog" can learn "new" tricks. [provided he pays attention. biggrin]

Having another senior moment...the later PTK limit valve senses governor pressure, not throttle pressure. So, if the governor is correct for the axle ratio, the mph limit will be about the same.

Thanks John,
No changes were done to the governor nor do I remember where the trans originated from (40 years ago frown ) Tf-2 kit with a good rebuild. with that limited info any idea what one could expect?
