Speedo cable broke any ideas - 06/14/08 12:33 AM

Broke the cable in the speedo wed night.I guess it didnt like the 100 mph blast. It was only 43 year old.Any ideas to get it out of the sheath. It broke by the head of the speed and the 65 you just dont unscrew the other end from the trans.I just dont want to lose all my gear grease pulling the trans end.Ill eithe get a universal at work or my kid has his old one from his 62.I might even have a new inside piece at the other garage from the 65 Belvedere I parted.Rocky

Not worried about the cable. My kid works at AZ and our shop is right next to them.My problem is getting the broken piece out of the outer cable.I cant see it or id reach in with my tiny needle noise pliers.Ill just replace the inner as 65 cables are totally different than later ones. You have to pull the whole speed gear and all the 4 speed grease comes pouring out.Ill do it if I have to.Rocky

Just unscrew the nut which retains the speedo cable to the pinion adapter housing in the trans. There should not be any fluid getting past the seal on the speedo pinions drive gear, so no fluid should leak out.

I guess you never worked on an early Mopar. The gear is attached to the outer cable and it goes in the trans. Its not a late cable.Ive had it in and out since 69 when i got the car.Just dont want to have to refill the 4 speed. Rocky

Rocky,
You're dreaming!! You really know you can't do that without dumping the lube, I know you do. Just don't make too big a mess - but at least it's a 4 gear so you can drain it easily first.
Happy puddles,
Mike

Was the cable binding? If so, I would replace both pieces. Mike

Can you raise the rear of the car up fairly high so the lube runs to the front of the trans?
