EBC rotors worth it?

EBC rotors worth it? - 08/02/23 01:05 AM

As title says. I have a 12 ram 1500 2wd reg cab long bed, brakes were brand new w/in 5000 miles of my buying it, fronts pulsating like mad for last 2-3000. I've put 25k on it since I have had, mostly drive it empty but I have pulled a trailer (4k-4500 lb camper) a few times since spring
I like the "made in Britain" vs the "made in China" aspect of every single other rotor choice out there for one thing

Sounds like they are warp which usually makes the brake pedal pulsate wrenchscope

I have a relative who has that brand of rear rotors on a Ram 2500. So far so good I think? They got tired of parts store rotors not lasting and warping far too easily so they coughed up the money for the next level up parts.

I just put some on a truck a customer brought me, one was warped pretty bad and vibrating out of the box, I machined both and all was well. They did feel like a nice solid rotor though and cut pretty nice.

They are the only ones I will buy and have been for years. Only thing worth a damn since the foundry in Canada that used to supply all the better parts houses closed years and years ago. They are expensive and worth every penny. I’ve had 3 cars with them and maybe 4 if I think hard enough, put a set on a car I still have two years ago and they’ve been flawless as usual.

Had to wait for the boat during the Covid mess, was afraid I would have to go with the honorable mention powerstop brand off rockauto. Those bailed me out on a car I couldn’t get a set for one time and just had to do something.

Summit had the best price last time and got them here as soon as the boat arrived. I had found some place in Florida that claimed to have a set but when I bought them online I got a notice they didn’t. So better get on it if you are in dire need.

FYI their daily driver pads dust like crazy, so know that going in. Those have much better bite than the oem pads did. Had the car since new and noticed that right away. The dusting is bad enough I wish I’d gone back with factory pads though.

I buy the mopar ones. No problems when using them

EBCs are all I use.
I've got yellow pads on my Dakota, and will soon install Reds on my Neon.

I believe the rotors are cast in Italy, and machined in the UK. Expensive, but worth every cent.

I did that exactly once on a square body Cherokee XJ and never again. They were stickered over versions of the exact same parts store ones I'd bought previously for that same XJ. I could see thru the "Mopar" stickers on the boxes and though I paid 2-1/2x what the parts store wanted at the time they warped like potato chips just like the previous parts store ones i'd bought.
I'd owned 2 XJs and this was the 2nd of those, and that thing went thru rotors every 8-9 months, went thru 3 sets of rotors to 1 set of pads.i finally bought a set of EBC ones for that jeep.but it's been 8-10 years ago.

Power Stop has a good reputation. I've had them on my Chargers and been happy. Here's a discussion on them for a TRX.

Next (related) question
I know that their pads are rated by color.
I don't know the progression of colors, which is softer, harder,
Which are daily driver grade, which are next step, which recommended for towing, etc?
How do each grade "behave" regarding noise, longevity, rotor wear, heat build up, etc?
For the moment I'm only doing the fronts, will do the backs when the existing ones wear out.
I'm hoping the existing front pads are 1/2 remaining or better, if not I'll probably have to buy some local which won't be EBC ones... (I don't have time before next campout to order a set of their pads)
I didn't order a pad and rotor set when I got the rotors coming because I didn't know which ones of theirs were "good"/ "better"/best since I have never used EBC pads

Try "ebcbrakes.com" for the info - takes seconds...

Back in the day, a buddy used & liked their green pads on his street car...that he drove like the rear bumper was on fire.

Do some reading on their site. I believe the daily driver ones are ultimax. I find the dust objectionable. The color grades tell how track oriented they are and you might need to warm the brakes up before they start to bite. I would go back with oem pads unless you don’t care about dust, if you can live with that their daily pads will net you a bit better performance that you can tell right away.

i have found that if you bed in pads, regardless of the brand, it seems that you will get many trouble free miles out of your pads and rotors.
i have also found that if one turns your rotors on a "real" lathe instead of the common brake lathe, a better finish as well as true parallel rotor sides will give much improved life and performance.
i accomplish this by a fixture i made that clamps the rotor to the fixture as it would be clamped between the hub and wheel.
i realize most do not have machinist tools and machines in their home shops, but just throwing this out there as what i feel the correct procedure should be.
just my opinion as a machinist. your mileage will vary.

You may want to consider NAPA brand. While many NAPA parts may have been manufactured in China, NAPA requires their parts to meet or exceed OE specs. NAPA knows how to check and monitor quality. The quality of parts imported from China is the responsibility of the seller/retailer. If you want cheap, the Chinese will produce it for you. Don't forget iPhones, iPads and most computers are manufactured in China. They are capable of producing to spec if the buyer gives them one.

I like those and Good Bendix or Wagner pads.
Rockauto and Amazon both get them to you quick at better than local. Most have to other them too, so might as well save an order yourself.

You can also check RockAuto. They carry different levels of parts too. For example, the cheaper is "economy" up to either "heavy duty" or "performance". They even carry coated rotors.
