Are you talking about the A01 light package fender (top/front) mounted signal you can see from the driver's seat?

Originals are all round, never saw the square ones until the 1990's.

Both types were used. Depends on whether used for Turn-Signal or Emergency

Round. The mounting bracket as I recall will only fit the round.

So, some interesting replies ...

1) Sorry, I meant the relays - but everyone seems to call them flashers.

2) I have one of each square and round - turn and emerg

3) the mounting brackets accept both but fit the square ones better

this is an interesting statement because I've owned the car since '73, never changed a relay and the car was mothballed in '85. So I'm pretty sure the square one is original.

The factory parts manual calls them all Flashers. No mention of relay. 3 part numbers.
1-2932877 Most common turn and 4 way all car lines.
2-2932875 Says 2 lamp so it must be light duty.
3-2932876 Looks to be HD police and taxi.
The mounting clip is one number 2770998

All those part numbers are round. The 2932875 is blue plastic IIRC

It was more of a curiosity question than anything else. Going to be using some LEDs so need to replace both with electronic. The new ones are all plastic with a ground wire - I assume the originals grounded through the case.

OEM Flasher case does not need to be grounded.

Interesting ... I just looked at the FSM wiring diagrams and sure enough ... no grounds.

Just assumed 'cause some aftermarket units have ground pigtails that the originals were grounded.

I do not recall ever seeing a flasher that needed a ground with incandescent lighting. LED lighting may be a completely different story.

even the somewhat later model K cars did not use a ground wire on the flasher can[s].
however, when the flasher cans were combined into one [square] unit in [or around] the 96ish [?] model year, using a multiple prong unit, i don't know if those are grounded or not.
i never traced it to see.

oh, and LED lighting is indeed something different, needing grounds and [sometimes, if not most] needing correct polarity to work correctly.

I used a set of these and they are noticeably brighter, I mean like a multiple when viewed against my garage door back to back.

I don’t know what flasher my car has, but it still works the same with these bulbs. I’ve read a bunch of posts talking about issues running leds. The first set failed in 00 miles or less and the company sent another one no questions that have held up longer.

The original bulbs in the taillights were clear - are LEDs too bright to use clear? Should red LEDs be used there?

Re: '69 flashers - round or square ?? - 07/01/23 03:37 AM

I suppose it would be ok to use clear since the lens will tint it. That company suggested to use red on the brakes and I have to say it worked out. Seeing how much brighter it is let me know it’s worth it. I do carry the originals as spares after the set failed. I’m probably just too paranoid but I carry a trunk full of tools and parts so what was one more little box?

Murphy's law states: "A roadside breakdown will require the only tool and/or part not in your trunk"

add to that : "if you have it, it will not break".................
