What do I need to do to make a 46rh transmission work in a 03 dodge dakota. The truck currently has a 42re. I am installing a 318/390 stroker.Thanks for any help.

You'll need an RE series. 96 and newer.

Why wouldn't you use the existing trans? They hold up better and can easily be modified to handle more power, have a lot less weight, lot lighter rotating parts, lower 1st and second gears for better low speed TQ at the wheels but the same OD ratio so MPG is the same or even better plus you don't have to swap driveshaft(s), wiring, dipstick tube... and are noticeably faster, easier to install

Everything I read says they are too weak. And haven't seen anyone offering a build kit with mods to beef it up. You possibly know of someone?

Thanks Dave, I guess I'm still in the drag race mode. You gave me some logical info. I'm not going to race the Dakota, so no trans brake or anything to shock it. Just a street rod, I have built all the transmissions for my race cars plus my dodge cummins. I'll be 80 next month and guess I didn't want to mess with it. Just need to find a good rebuild kit. Thanks for opening my eyes Dave.
