Scattershield/Flywheel for 69 Charger with 472 Hemi? - 05/07/23 02:35 AM

I have a 472 hemi about 550 hp and 550 tq in a 69 Charger. I just picked up a good used 1970 b body 18 spline transmission with a McLeod RST clutch. What do you guys recommend for a flywheel and bellhousing? I'd prefer a scattershield for this HP level. What fits better a Lakewood or Quicktime (centering, and clutch fork fitment)? It looks like the Quicktime is more compact and lighter. I have 2-1/8" primary tube TTI headers. TTI said the flange on the Lakewood needs to be ground down a bit. Does the Quicktime need to be modified too? Should I go with a 130 or 143 tooth flywheel? Billet steel or aluminum. This will be a street driven car, no slicks with 3.91 gears. Do I need to partially pull the motor to install the scattershield. Or can I pull the existing 727 transmission and install everything from the bottom?

If you use the Lakewood, a 130 tooth is easier to fit. I don't know anything about the Quicktime.
Either way, don't run it without a scattershield. You only get one right foot.

That Charger is a heavy car and 3.91's aren't that deep. I would go with a steel flywheel for street driving. twocents
Sounds like a fun combo! up

If your car is not a 4 speed car originally you will need to cut the tranny tunnel out enough to weld in the 4 speed hump before being able to install the 4 speed in all Mopar body's from 1956 to when they quit making A,B, and E body automatic tranny cars scope
Sorry for the bad news if you didn't know that blush

Do you have the 4 speed hump to weld into the tranny tunnel also?

My thoughts exactly DrCharles. Thanks, I feel like my Charger is not getting driven enough because it is a automatic.

I did get a new steel floor hump with the parts lot Cab_Burge. Does the z-bar bracket get welded in too? The things I know I am missing are the flywheel, bellhousing, and a console shift handle. Are the new two bolt hurst shifters much better than the original ones? The price of original handles is quite high. It looks like a get a new handle and shifter from Hurst for less than a restored slip in handle. The original 1970 shifter I have now feels rough and could likely use a rebuild kit.

The Hurst 4 speed console shifter sticks are hard to find and expensive. As far as hard or rough shifting I would check it, the shifter body, for dirt and lack of grease between the sliding plates and shifter arms on the shifter before doing anything else.
Will Hurst or anyone else clean and service them?

Doing the same. The dilemma is Chrysler made two setups, one for the Hemi and one for the wedge with different versions for each. Hemi had two flywheels and bells and wedge had 2 of each. Most all scattersheilds are for the 11” clutch, the problem comes with starters, they made 2 for the Hemi, 66-69 has the direct drive starter and it’s own flywheel. 70-71 changed to the aluminum bell and 10-1/2 scalloped clutch (440-383 the same) SO if you want to use the 11” clutch buy the 8 bolt flywheel for a 440, it has the ring gear on the correct side for the auto starter. Believe me I went through this whole sh!t show. Stock flywheel has ring gear (172 teeth) on front for the direct drive starter, double reduction has ring (143 teeth) on back (flywheels are made so it can’t be changed), 10-1/2 flywheel has the 130 tooth (some shields aren’t drilled for both starters or the direct drive either) A BIG CAN OF WORMS. Hope I got that all straight.
Forgot I’m using the blow shield with either the stock type wheel and direct drive starter (I’m drilling bell so that DD starter works) or I’ll use the auto starter and the 440 flywheel I mentioned, I have all those pieces now. $$$$
Either going behind a 590 cu in Hemi

Just do everything like you are building a drivetrain for a 440 with an 8 bolt flange. The Quicktime is smaller but you can only use a 130 tooth 10.5 wheel with it. I would stay away from any of the direct drive stuff. You can use a standard mini Denso style starter with the Lakewood with a 10.5 or 11" wheel. I have just had my hands on a nice bell made by American Powertrain and it can use an A833 4-speed or you also have the option of the Tremec 5 or 6 speed. You can also use a 130 or 143 tooth wheel. Mcleod makes some nice modern style diaphragm plates and metallic discs with good clamping pressure with light pedal pressure.

You said it quicker and better than I did!

Thanks guys. I'm leaning towards the Quicktime Bellhousing (unless you guys say the Lakewood is better) with a 130T flywheel. My McLeod clutch is drilled for a 10.5" flywheel. I already have a mini auto starter from a newer auto truck. I will disassemble, clean and lube the Hurst shifter. I found a good video on YouTube showing the process.
