How to choose a flywheel

Doing a 69 rr. The engine is a stock 67 440. All 4 of my options are slightly different. Is there something to look for to balance right for that engine? I'll try and post a pic.

How I choose one is to go to Summit and buy a NEW BILLET wheel , my feet are worth more than the savings of using an OLD, heat checked, cracked cast steel flywheel, especially if you aren't running a blowsheild.

I wouldn't use any of those. Like the last post says, buy a new billet unit. I found these guys to be reasonable.

Any stock oem is fine if it's inspected properly & it's for a "driver/cruiser".
Save the billet ones for those who race or like to power shift at the upper-bands.
Pics could be better for viewing.

iagree there is also speculation that once the cracks and heat spots are in the flywheel resurfacing only hides them as the metal itself has permanently changed. I've always recommended a new flywheel when available twocents

I agree. By the time you pay a machine shop to resurface your old one, you aren't that far away from a good steel replacement.

Your old stock one might be just fine until one day in the heat of the moment, you decide to race someone and dump the clutch at higher revs. Then it's off to the rehab hospital for some new feet. whistling Personally I won't run anything but a stock engine without a scattershield. twocents

The 426 street hemi and 440 HP stick shift motors in 1969 used mostly 143 tooth flywheels and matching bell housing. Check your bell housing before deciding which size flywheel to use twocents scope

I've been told by one of the old Mopar drag Seminar engineers that Mopar never made cast iron flywheels after the late 1940 or so, I think, only cast steel work
I saw what happened to Bob Lambeck 1968 Modified Production car when it exploded a Borg and Beck pressure plate in 2nd gear around 7600 RPM, it basically ruined that car along with breaking some bones in his right foot puke work
Sheet happens that we can't control sometimes whiney shruggy

I once had a Hemi car whose bellhousing area looked like someone had shot it with a shotgun from underneath.
Its early life was spent street racing and maybe some track racing (there was a log kept on the car).
It got a Lakewood housing & quality clutch stuff, and a rev-limiter, when I restored it to its period Day2 engine/drivetrain specs.
But for my stuff that just gets cruised, I just don't like seeing cracks or heavy heat damage; they'll get new OEM-quality stuff.

Check with 440source. I found their billet flywheels to be reasonable.

The flywheel with the casting number 2843212 is a 143-tooth and no engines that used that flywheel were externally balanced...last used in '69.

I don't think mopar used a 140 tooth flywheel.

Super stock hemi used the 130 tooth and standard starter, but street hemis 66-69 used the 172 tooth and direct drive starter. 70 They moved all to the 130 tooth fw with the standard started and the 513 aluminum bell house for big block.

'62-later Mopar flywheels:


172 tooth= 14.75" if you measure across the ring gear.

143 tooth= 14.568" at the ring gear

130 tooth= 13.195" at the ring gear

All the 143 tooth flywheels, 6 and 8 bolt crank patterns, I've seen or heard of were 11.0 inch clutches scope
