Legendary "antiqued" colored seat covers? Huh?

Legendary "antiqued" colored seat covers? Huh? - 02/09/23 06:46 PM

Good afternoon everyone
So I am redoing my 70 Cuda interior back to it's original red. I finally got my seat covers from Legendary (only took a year and some change, but I get it). I get them and they have these light black spots on the vinyl. I called legendary and they said it's "antiqued" and that's the way they come.

Has anyone ran into this before? My car is a daily driver so they will get used. If you have, is this noticeable once they are installed.

I kinda feel disappointed and bummed about this. I waited a long time and saved up for them to get a good quality original seat covers.

First question is there a non-"antiqued" version of your seat covers?

And who restores an interior and tries to make it "antiquied" unless it's a survivor and trying to save the overall look?

Good question, they were sold under the original type of vinyl. There was ZERO mention in the description of antiqued color. I don't have a clue why anyone would want that. It kinda reminds me of the Ford vinyl that had that weird color.

Someone doesn't want the hassle of a return !!

Legendary's reply might be code for " that's the only material we have at the moment"...No one would ever want something like that unless specifically requested under the conditions already mentioned.. Seems odd they wouldn't have confirmed the order after all this time before just kicking them out the door...EDIT: I'm not seeing any options that would state "antiqued', "distressed", etc... I wonder what's actually going on ?

i had a 1970 Charger R/T V code six pack 4 speed car that I was trying to restore, I order the black bucket seat cover kit from Legendary and the guy I talked to said that Chargers in 1970 had Charcoal covers, not black confused I had the original rear seat but not the buckets and I was sure that had black covers on them so I made them make them with black vinyl and when they came i found out Iwas wrong, definitely different color than the rear covers. I had to eat those and order the proper ones whiney realcrazy

up Sounds strange to me shruggy

After the pic's maybe someone else can EMAIL them and ask about ordering a set and if they have a method of antiquing using the BS about trying to restore a survivor?
I do know that mold will stain vinyl leaving varying sizes of little black dots about the size of an 8 to 10-32 screw popcorn

IMO - for years, Legendary's RED, TAN and Burnt Orange interior vinyl has been "OFF" - originally they were solid colors

here's the "spotted" tan shock the RED looks similar

Don’t know if they sell “antiqued” b body stuff, but this cover was purchased like 15 years ago. Didn’t have anything weird going on with the color.

A mopar guy used to have a shop in the area and he said he could sew some covers much cheaper than what legendary was selling, except it was in a generic material. Car wasn’t some spot on resto so I went with it and it was awesome. We used legendary foam. Maybe you could find somebody like that? Look for a guy about 82 years old. He will be the one you need.

I’ve had several discrepancies with a Legendary. Back when you had quick service, it was not a big deal. Once on a 68 charger door panel, they told me there was never two tone blue panels made, when I ordered them. I had to send them my original and they had both colors in stock and made them for me. We ordered a set of covers for a 70 Cuda in the tan color and it came back gold in color. They said that was the correct color. I had to send them a pieces of the material for the seat and the side skirt. They sent me seats that were correct then. They will tell you whatever they can to get you to accept on odd colors.

I caught them on 69 0r 70 Mustang front set covers, The backrest pleats were 90° off to the lower cover. Called them and they said yes that's the way they were. I provided them several pictures of original seats that were not. He called me and said we have been making them wrong for years blush agreed to send replacements and asked that I not "spread" the word. Watching ebay and auctions i saw quite a few mustangs with the error whistling

^^^ What the heck - I had a few '69-'70 Mustang Sportsroofs back in the day, NEVER a difference in the way the pleats ran.
Gotta be thousands of them out there, so it's really bold - I mean, foolish - to try to BS that.

I do recall a few decades ago seeing that mottled look on burnt orange seat bolsters on a '70 GTX, but I don't know if that was legit/recovered/whatever.

I didn't feel he was BS'ing me. When I first called he said that is what their documentation called out, and had been since they started making them. After the pictures of original seats, he seemed quite embarrassed, said it was a documentation error that had never been caught but the required steps to correct it had been taken wink

As for the OP question on antiquing, I call BS on that beer

it seems more and more trusted companies are getting to be "not the same anymore".
that's really a shame.

I have been happy with their products but it seems like others have not. Hopefully things will get worked out.

i just ordered seat covers for a 73 dart sport [front bench with arm rest] in the original "bright blue" [b5] vynl.
6-8 month lead time, and when you order, you own them. the only thing to discuss when you receive them is if they are the wrong color, or they are damaged somehow in shipping.
as this is not my car, and i am just a parts procurer for the owner, i research parts then make [my] recommendations. the owner has the final say as to what to purchase and what company to purchase from.
if it were my car, i would have one of the trusted local upholstery guys sew up a set of covers. it would be cheaper, faster, and look the same as his original covers.
i suggested this, but it was not to be.
it will be interesting to see if these covers come "antiqued".

Maybe Legendary and the customers should do photo exchanges before any orders are finalized? Customer sends photos or maybe even samples to Legendary and Legendary sends back photos of the materials and pattern and layout of what they are going to use. For my '68 RR with a two-tone green interior at first the got the two-tone wrong with the lighter green in the center of the door and rear panels backwards. Then when I received the bench seat and rear seat covers the originals had a darker green top on both front and rear seats. They said they have never seen this so I sent them photos of the originals and two others I bought at swap meets. Then when the car was sitting waiting for some other things the center of the rear side panels started to un-attach itself from the panel from I assume sun heat. They replaced all of the door and rear panels FOC as the fronts were showing the delamination too but the replacement panels they sent were once again backwards with the lighter green in the middle/center. They were very responsive with making it right and covering (pun) all of the issues but that was back in 2003/2004 don't know how they are now? Have only used Legendary for all of my Mopars and they were always great to work with. Hopefully they will work things out with the OP's issues.

i can't send pictures of the front seat, as i just picked up the correct bench seat [actually, i got the rear seat as well, as i had to take both] and it has black vynl. [the car came with incorrect 80's vealore buckets]
the rear seat is original, and it's the B5 [bright blue] color the build sheet calls for, so i can use it as a guide.
