440-6 idle adjustment

440-6 idle adjustment - 04/18/09 01:44 PM

I am advised to try leaning out my idle a little to rid the backfire on deacceleration. Do I turn the adjustment screws in or out to lean it out? Also what is a standard for the outboards? Holley tech thought maybe 1/8 turn out but was not sure.

I think on those carbs its out to lean because your adding air not fuel

are yuo sure you don't have a tiny exhaust leak somewhere? Especially if it's only out one side.

all 3 carbs are clockwise to lean, counter clockwise to make richer.

Idle screws add a mixture of air and fuel.

A lean idle should not cause a backfire. Look elsewhere for your problem. Check the normal causes first before blamming the carbs. An exhaust leak or fouled spark plug are the most common causes.
