Can drum brake a body a arms be made to work with disc - 06/13/08 02:48 AM

I have the spidles and changeover parts except for the a arms.I am aware of the differencesin the drum brake ball joint and bigger disc brake ball joint. Can anything be done to make the small ball joint fit the disc spindle-as in a sleeve for the spindle to make the hole the correct size.Is this possible or even safe.Opinions please.

Someone was supposed to be making a BBJ stud in the SBJ housing but they are expensive.

Another way is to take off the collar and weld an insert for the big ball joint on your existing arm.

My 74 Duster with 10" drum brakes already had the bbj a arms. Made the disk upgrade real easy.

what year A body? 73 and up will already have the large ball joint uca, drum or disc.
A sleeve seems like a good option, I wonder if anyone makes an "insert" that would do the job

Ita a 71 demon with a slant six.I think the correct size sleeve pressed into the spindle would work saving a lot of time and money.I dont know if anyone makes it though.

someone posted the co name that made them but I lost it. Going the other way I would think a correct dimention sleeve would be safe . If you UCA bushings were good & you kept the same ride height it would certainly save having to realign.

Since it appears my answer wasn't good enough, here's another for you.

The ball joints that had the BBJ stud in the SBJ housing were really expensive and not worth the expense. You're better of modding your current arms, getting factory 73+, or tubular depending on fab skill and $$$.

Rob- I can't speak for anyone else, but I found that site a little difficult to navigate. I assume that the idea is one could take a hole saw, remove the old ball joint flange, and weld in something like a TS300? I know most would shy at having that kind of work done on a UCA, but I, for one, am glad that you posted that...I'm gonna need some...

Thanks to everyone for the help.I may get the correct dimensions and try having some sleeves made. This could be an easy way out for drum to disc conversions.
