Big block A body and power steering

Big block A body and power steering - 12/30/22 10:58 PM

Was having a conversation with an old friend who asked "was p/s available in 67 to 69 GTS with a big block". Never owning one myself I wasn't 100% sure. My response was I believe so. The only big block A body that it wasn't available with was the "M" code A body. Also no 4spd or column shift with the M code iirc.
What say the Moparts community ???
Thanks.

My 69 383 4-speed GTS has factory power steering. It came in late 68, another reason the exhaust manifolds were redesigned... wave

The reason for no 4-speed for the 440 M-code, was at the time no DANA narrow enough for the A-Body. Ha, that didn't stop a lot of M-code owners from cutting the floor and putting in a 4-speed with the stock 8-3/4, including the owner of my Dart 440 M-code GTS. I have an auto floor patch to fix that fortunately.

IIRC, the early 383 A-bodies couldn't get PS, but as Rhino says, that was addressed later.
Pretty sure a buddy's 383/AT '69 Dart GTS had PS, but I last saw & drove it about 30 years ago.
Also IIRC no PS on the 440 A-bodies, due to the larger mass of the RB; likely an interference near the battery tray or fitting the larger PS box.
While the Hemi A-body drag cars got Danas, they also had offset wheels, and in the obvious case of the Darts, radiused openings to fit the resulting package.
Those mods were obviously a non-starter for mass production.

Fun fact: I remember a dyno test where the dyno headers on an RB made 40 HP more than the race headers that fit the Cuda Stocker that engine was destined for.

Buddy of mine has a 69 383 Barracuda with power steering. IIRC, he said it took a special fitting in the steering box to route the hose away from the block/exhaust.

Yes, it is a 90 degree brass fitting that is available at any hydraulic store, Mopar didn't invent a new one, you can almost see it in this pic...

340 cars used the same fitting. A better solution for a non-original car is the late 70s hose that does not use a fitting on the gear.

Late '70's hose from what? I'm going to be in this situation soon and it would be great not to have to walk the face of the earth for another part!

All 69 M code A bodies were console automatic and power steering was not available.
