I am not sure what you are calling a housing but the retainer that holds the gear in the tranny has marks on it for the differnet size gears. Install the retainer in the worng location and the gear will not mesh or it will not go in uness it is forced anf then it is damaged. I may be completely missing you question but I tried.

There is a little raised mark on the tranny at the bottom of the hole. Line it up with the knotch on the retainer that coresponds with the number of teeth on you gear. If you have it right the gear and retainer will slip right in with no problem. It is funny because I replaced the gear in my 904 tonight. It is simple. I have done them in 727s as well.

zero

The gear that drives the plastic speedo gear is just a section of the outputshaft with teeth cut on it.

From the tech archives. The link is at the top of every page. A lot of good info if you bother to search a little. http://www.moparts.org/Tech/Archive/auto/21.html

Chances of no gear inside the trans, none. Chances you installed the speedo housing incorrectly, 100%.

I had the plastic retainer & it didn't want to go in easily(& I had it aligned right) & later I had to change to the alum one to use a '66 dart cable to mate my 83 904 with my 65 dart speedo & teh alum one went right in easily. perfect fit.
