Cam choice question

Cam choice question - 04/15/09 11:12 PM

For my 1966 Charger. It is a 1965 383 with forged .030 flattops. Fresh 452 heads with stock valves. Edelbrock RPM intake and cast iron manifolds.

Not looking to go 10's or anything just be responsive. Unsure of torque converter yet. Maybe a 1800- 2200 or so. Trans rebuilt with shift kit. Has 3.55 rear gears.

Thinking 750cfm Eddie carb or a BB Q-Jet.

Leaning towards a Comp extreme or Lunati Voodoo. Not a fan of MP Purpleshafts. Had bad luck with the cam lobes wiping on them.

Any suggestions would be great. Lots of "if's" I suppose.

Vinny

a 650 eddie thunder series AVS or 600 eddie AFB might actually be a better carb for street manners/economy/0-5000 RPM performance. on my 360, I had MUCH better low RPM/off idle responsiveness with a 600 eddie over the 750..felt like I gained 20+ HP down around the converter flash point (~2500 RPM) and didn't lose anything up top by the butt dyno....also gained 2mpg.

Thanks for the advice. Guess I will use a smaller carb. I have a 600 Eddie and a 625 (I think) Carter. With the MSD ignition I guess I wasn't worried about overfueling but overlooked bottom end performance.Comp. XE262 it is. Any suggestions for converter?

Thanks again, Vinny

Flat tops in a 383 with open chamber heads.... Would NOT be my choice of combo's. I'd consider ditching the 452's in favor of some 516's with 1.74 ex. valves. You're probobly looking at around 8:1 compression, which is not going to support any sort of performance camshaft real well.

FWIW, my 360 is about 7.8:1 acutal measured (reringed longblock) with a comp XE262, and it moves my 3950 lb boat very well, keeps up with a LX hemi car from a roll, which should translate into 14's at the strip. I'm running a MP166k converter, 27" tires, 3.55 rear with an A500 OD tranny.

Summit has the "big " Summit brand cam and lifter kit on sale less than $100 and for a low compression 383 it would do a great job cheap--it really is a great street cam
