2016 Ram intermittent ABS Failure

2016 Ram intermittent ABS Failure - 10/06/21 11:58 AM

Just want to share a fix I discovered for an intermittent ABS on my 2016 Ram with 66k on it. The ABS light would come on for awhile then go out for about a month, tried tapping on ABS module with hammer handle while GF sat in truck watching with truck running, tried wiggling the wires & connector, reset with the scanner but problem persisted. I looked for a new ABS module but no luck for short bed regular cab P/N 5163230a75c. Saturday I removed the module from the ABS motor, checked all the pins in the module nothing loose, I noticed some green contamination on a frame ground near the ABS module plug. I removed the ground, cleaned up the wire end, mounting stud & frame. Coated all with dielectric grease, reassembled, packed the ABS plug with dielectrict grease also. Cleared codes, & have driven about 100 miles with no problems. Ma Mopar here in Charlotte quoted me $1500 to replace ABS motor & module, but couldn't get parts!

Maybe related maybe not but I’ve had to replace all 4 abs sensors on my 15 SRT. After the last one the ABS light came on (among others) then with my Snap On box, cleared and reset all modules, seems computer was’t recognizing the new parts. After reading what you found I’ll look at the ABS wires now since that could be why they would all go bad, not much to them just a plastic piece.

When they quoted you $$$$ for a module had they completed a pin-point diagnostic test? Or, was it a " I need a module, how much?" So many techs today either don't understand how to pin-point an electrical issue or just don't bother.

A visual inspection like the one you performed catches a lot of issues. Well done.

It was over the phone with service after I gave them the code scan.

Thank you

Now for an update, yesterday I was out on a back country road on my way home from Lowes. I decided to try out the abs as it was raining & wouldn't flat spot the tires too badly. I braked hard enough to activate the ABS 2 times in a half mile, after the second time the service brake light lite up, went home & code scanned it with same results as before C2200-49. Called a friend in PA thats a parts manager at Hillview CPD in Greensburg, he ran my module #5163230A75C which superseded to 68295368AC. There are 2 in the USA & the dealerships will not sell them. No expected availability until 3-2022. I go out to part the truck & guess what ABS light is out on restart & no I didn't clear the codes?? [censored]?

I have 5 Charger popo cars parked at the shop with varing electronic failures: TCM. ABS, ABS wheel sensors, etc. I'm tired of this new improved crap. Give me a 76 3/4 ton Power Wagon with Nice big pipe bumpers & a huge tow hitch. LOL Sadly my 16 ram has been hit 3 times in 3 years coming home from work. None my fault!

As a side note I was almost killed by the ABS on my 12 street glide when the ABS failed. The ABS failure resulted in total brake loss, its a design flaw in 08 & newer Harleys that the company knows about but will not address as there have been people killed by this. I hit a car but got thrown off of the bike an was able to run with it literally up against a jersey barrier, only a small amount of road rash & bruises Harleys fix is that you have to bring your bike in every 2 years for a bleed & flush of the brake system with ABS activation. A bandage at best.
