Need help getting right flywheel for cast crank 440

Could anyone steer me in the right direction to buy/modify a manual trans flywheel for a cast crank 440?

I've searched various sites for info and seem to find only vague reference to what's really needed.

So this is a 1977 440 from a motorhome and has the correct external balance dampener and I'm putting an A-833 trans behind it.

I understand I'll need to drill the crank for the pilot bushing plus get the proper external balance flywheel.

But I'm not finding a ready to go flywheel on the various auto parts sellers.

From what I've read I could possibly:

1) Buy a neutral balance flywheel and add the proper bolt on weight (But haven't found a flywheel with threaded holes for the weight)
2) Find the instructions for drilling a neutral balance flywheel per the Mopar Performance Chassis manual (can't find the manual)

You may, should to be safe, need to take all the parts to a good shop to have it balanced with any flywheel you get. Have the crankshaft fix first for the bushing or buy one of the newer style pilot ball bearings that press into the flange on the back of your crankshaft hub and cut the input shaft off so it will fit and work properly for your project
I'm sure there are not a lot of good used cast crankshaft externally balanced 440 flywheels out there to choose from

I should also add that this is a stock engine in a 3800 lb b body that won't see rpm over 4500 and is mainly going to be used for cruising until my other engine gets built, etc.

The motorhome 440 runs well and I'm not tearing it down, just going to use it as is for now.

IIRC a LA360/383/400/cast crank 440 can all use the same external fly wheel. I asked about this several yrs ago here and what I come up with. I also have a 77-MH cast crank 440. has the bullet nose damper on the front. at the moment I have a aftermarket damper that is N balance with a weight that bolts on to damper for a cast crank 440. and run a external balance 727 converter from a 77-400 van.

I did score a external balance flywheel for a LA360 engine to use on my cast crank 440 for a 4 speed some day. if I ever come up with all the rest but a flywheel is the first piece to start a project.

most of the time when searching I use a 77/78- 400B engine non a/c doge truck for reference at parts counter or for car parts a 68 road runner RB440 for HP parts. this works for what I want for the MH440 swaps.

like mentioned use a newer magnum engine pilot bearing. it fits the TC/crank hub just knock it in the big hole flush.

I would be searching for a 78 d200 400/435/d60 truck or 82 d350 360/435/d70 for finding a flywheel to use. as I find these combos are the most common in trucks.

All factory big block engines with manual transmissions had forged cranks right to the end of big block production. That's why you can't find a factory flywheel.

Your only option is to modify a neutral flywheel or verify the imbalance on a 360 flywheel and adjust if necessary.

There used to be a company that made a thin counterweight plate that you sandwiched between the crank and the flywheel but I don't think it's in production anymore.

I can't recall if it's repeated in the engine manuals or not. Probably not.

but trucks used external balance flywheels and the LA360/383/400/ cast crank 440 in trucks/MH had a 435 granny 4 speed so that is the factory flywheel that's needed to use the cast crank 440 in a car with 833 4 speed.

not sure what I am missing but the weighted 727 auto TC behind my cast crank 440 is fine.

I had a couple d200 trucks with a 400/435/d60 combo

360 flywheels are unique to 360's only.

What bellhousing are you planning to use? Car bell, truck bell or scattershield?

Here is a 440 cast crank wheel but it was used for industrial equipment, no clutch. This is a 172T wheel and came from a 440 powered water pump.

McCleod sells a B.B. flywheel that can be internal or externally balanced. They provide weights you can add to create the imbalance to the opposite side where the factory just drilled out material to create the same inbalnce.

SST (Silver Sport Transmission) also has a SFI approved 130 tooth flywheel 10.5/11.0 pressure plate patterns, neutral balance, but comes with a bolt on weight for the cast 440 crank...I'm running one behind my cast crank 440 for the last decade+....zero issues

I was thinking of getting the Lakewood 15335. It's pricey but they want as much or more for used stock ones I've seen on E-pay.

Maybe I'm not looking in the right place but checking O'Reilly's, Rock Auto, Ebay, and Carparts.com I'm not finding a stock external balance flywheel listed for the trucks with manual trans.

Everything I've found is internal or neutral balance. I'm thinking of getting one of those and just try drilling the 3 holes per the diagram provided in the other posts.

Brewer's performance has a wide variety of flywheels. They charge around $30 to have their flywheels drilled for external balanced engines.
