1970 Dodge Dart Swinger 340

1970 Dodge Dart Swinger 340 - 09/09/21 06:40 PM

Ok Dart Experts
I have a question

I just bought a 70 Swinger 340 and my car has just the Dodge lettering (block) on the trunk.
The car has been repainted and I don't know the history on the car.

Did 70 Swinger 340s come with Dart Swinger on the trunk?
Did some come with just Dodge?
My car was built in Canada, I know there were some differences in the Canadian built cars. (VIN placement on body panels)
Could this be one?

This is my first 70 Swinger Dart, I am just curious and want to learn as much as I can about the car.

See attached photos, one is an example of the Dart Swinger, the other is my car with only the Dodge emblem.

Thanks
Matt

I know Dodge was on lower trim levels (e.g. Dart GT for 1970).

I believe the first photo with two emblems is correct for 340 Swingers, and all the other non-340 cars got the single Dodge cursive script. This is from wandering junkyards and seeing photos of low mile originals.

Block style lettering is for 71. I had an original butterscotch 71 car and those have the block 'Dodge' letters on both the hood and trunklid. Both off to one side of the car.

All 1970 darts were built in Windsor Ontario. All 340 swingers had both emblems on the trunk panel. Joel cooper runs the swinger 340 registry. He's on for a bodies only or just google swinger 340 registry. He can answer any questions you may have.

Thanks Steve
Yeah I am thinking my deck lid got switched out or emblems got left off after the repaint.
I also recently found out that all the 70 Darts were built in Windsor Canada.
This is my first 70 Dart and I really am not familiar with the cars and appreciate the help.

Thanks for the info on the registry.

I'll agree that the vast majority of the 191,986 Darts for 1970 were assembled in CANADA

~171,205 were built at the WINDSOR, ONTARIO (0R) plant (~89.2%), but
~ 2,818 were built at the Los Angeles, CA (0E) plant (~1.5%) &
~17,963 were built at the Hamtramck, MI (0B) plant (~9.4%)

This is something new to me, though I'm far from an expert on those cars.. Do you have any actual vin numbers, fender tags, or broadcast sheets showing this? I'd like to know more about those cars as the widespread belief was all darts were built in canada in 1970. Any 340 swingers built at those plants?

Another marker on those cars is the bumble bee on the rear side glass. All 70 340 Swingers had them. They all got chrome exhaust tips as well, while many 340 Dusters and Demons got standard (non-dressup) exhaust outlets. Rally dash was standard on all 1970 340 cars, too. Also standard on 1971 340 Dusters/Demons, while the rare (Canadian only) 1971 Swinger Specials got the standard dash.

Hi Matt M I am by no means a Dart expert but I just wanted to welcome you to Dart ownership up Be prepared when you stop and get gas as everyone will come over and tell stories about a Dart they had or someone they knew had.

Think all CA market cars in 1970 had turndown exhaust pipes and no chrome tips, including the Dart 340 cars?

The 70 Swinger exhaust tips are shorter than the other a-body cars as well. Very common to see people put the chrome tips on that stick out too far.

Also I think I once read that the fender turn signal indicator option was not available on 340 cars for some reason? Maybe the two hood scoops were in the way?
