triangle fuel cell sending unit problems

since i"ve started with this fuel cell the sender hasnt worked right......so i went with a auto meter gauge...73/12 ohm...so i pulled the sender and am getting o ohms on the sender with it hooked up power on no matter which way it is ,straight up and upside down....i take the positive side of wire reading off the unit and get .030 ohms key off.....key on i get 0 ohms...volts.. key on i get 4.56 volts..do you think the sender is bad and am i geting the right readings for ohms and volts on the wire going to the gauge??
..the sender is 9 1/2 inches long and jegs and summit has them but only 8 1/2 inches long....

is triangle fuel cells still in business?..just thinking if sender is shorter i am not going to get the right level reading.....the max length from top to bottom is 10 1/4

You cannot and should not try to read the resistance with power to the sender.

Pull the sender out and read the resistance with the float at the top and at the bottom.

Do you have a ground to the sender?

i ohmed the sender out of the fuel cell with the flost at top....0 ohms...bottom...0 ohms.....i used a jumper wire with aligator clips on each end....grounded good....

If you are getting no resistance full or empty, the sender sounds bad.

okay ...i just went out and tryed it again....pulled sender ran a jumper and grounded to body of sender and ohmed it each way....o...ohms....is triangle fuel cells still in business....its 9 1/2 inches long.....jegs and summit sells 8 1/2

No need to ground it...if you have the sending unit out, just connect one lead of your ohm meter to the sending unit terminal and the other to the body (where it would ground)

If still zero both ways...sounds bad. As for knowing if they are still around, did you try a google search for them?

i looked at google and it dont look good....i guess the 8 1/2 will have to do......the ohms and volts coming from the gauge sounds right??

It sounds like yours is bad. Just double check your ohm meter that you are using the correct scale.

As far as grounding I am not familiar with this brand tank you have and assuming it is plastic? And no foam inside right?

its an aluminum cell with foam inside....was on right scale and found isspro website...so we will see if i can get correct one.....thanks guys for your help

If it read zero ohms with the float up and down the fuel gauge should alaways show a full tank? Is this what was happening?
Zero ohms is basically a short circuit.

it show full when it was full... at 1/2 a tank it would show empty....new one coming so that should take care of that problem

Well that contradicts everything you said. You said you tested it at all levels and it was at zero. That means the gauge should stay at one end and not move.

I'm thinking you did not check the resistance correctly, or not telling us what you are doing correctly.

There is a posibility you have the wrong guage for the sending unit you are using. Or the otherway around.

If you are getting a new unit from ISSPRO I hope you did not get the RA9509-ISS as it is not the correct unit for the guage you indicated

The only units I see is the 240 to 33 ohm listed, you mentioned you had a 73/12 ohm guage. So based on the catalog you should be getting a

RA9508-FORD

or

Ra9509-FORD

And these are special order items according to the catalog. Look at page 26 of the catalog.

If you are using foam you should not be using a sending unit with a arm as it will stick on the foam. Remove the foam if you are.

when it was in the car thats what it showed but when i remove the sending unit from the car and tested it i got 0 ohms upside down and upright..maybe i screwed it up...i have a 73/12 ohms ford/mopar auto meter fuel level gauge and ordered a #5561 fuel sender with a date code 31100...this is the ford/mopar 73/12 ohms sender 9 1/2 inches .....they are making this for me.....something not in stock or listed

Sorry I hate to see people replace things before actually determining the cause of the problem. Hopefully everything will turn out ok in the end.

Do check the part with the ohm meter before you install it to make sure the values are correct for your guage. Use a stick or something to push the float (up/down)when testing.
