383 Non-A/C Alternator Out of Line - 09/01/21 01:37 AM

Hello;
After having two alternator - water pump belts fail recently, someone pointed out that my alternator did not line up with the fan and crank pulleys.
The car is 70 Challenger R/T, 383, and stock. I've owned it for a while, and it was a reasonable unmolested car when I got it.
See the photos for how the brackets are installed now, they appear from the web to be the correct ones in correct location. The belt comes very close to the bolt on top right bracket hole, and the belt failed there; I've since installed a thinner bolt, but clearance is still minimal.
To get the alternator in line, I added a couple of thick washers and a slightly longer spacer. It works, but I am curious why I had to jerry rig it since I don't think it was built this way.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mark

To me, it looks like the rear alternator spacer on that top pivot bolt is too short.
That would cause the alternator to sit too far back closer to the cylinder head.
Spacing it forward with a longer spacer would move the alternator forward and get the belt to align properly.

Having it angled back like that would make it end up closer to that top bolt since the whole thing is out of position.

I'm working on a similar problem. Anybody have the correct length for the spacer sleeve that goes between the head and alternator?

70 RR 383. Hard to get a tape in there.....looks like 1 5/8 for the small one and 2 1/2 for large

i just measured a 69 383 and got 1 5/8" for the small one, and 2 3/8" for the large one.
however, the [moveable] alternator bushing in the rear ear sticks out 1/8" into the space the large spacer occupies.
