72 Charger 440 What is it? How Rare? - 08/11/21 11:23 PM

Been out of the Mopar game for a little while. Bought a 1972 Charger with two Fender Tags. I was able to decode most of it, but some are not real clear on the tag. Looks like an original Red 440 car. However, the 2nd fender tag just has a backwards "R" and "H" on it. Trying to figure out what they means and what the axle ratio/code is. Anything else that people can point out will be appreciated. I attached photos of the decode I was able to do.

Also, this car came with the bulge hood, door hash indents and the RT style taillights. So, what did they call this model? An RT? A "Rally"? Thanks for your help.

Re: 2nd Fender Tag Help Model ID What is it? How Rare? - 08/12/21 12:17 AM

The second tag is very common for Lynch Road.

I can not say every B-body they built for '72 - '74 had one, but there sure are a lot of them.....

This car was inspected by R & H - whoever they were..........

U-code '72 Charger Rallyes are not growing on trees - you got you a nice car - very desirable! I'd love to have one. My best friend in late summer 1976 bought a B5 1972 Charger Rallye 440 U-code with black interior & Ramcharger hood. Car was pretty fast until the headers burned the wire & fouled one of the plugs.

Rallye was the replacement package for the R/T submodel which ended on 71.

You could get the Rallye package on any WL21 or WH23 model. It was not anymore a VIN deal but an added code on Fender tag and BuildSheet... A57. LynchRoad plant never added this code on fender tag thought for whatever reason, but some of their options individually added into the tag, such as rear sway bar, performance hood and stuff like that. This items were exclusive to te Rallye Package, so having one of these codes it meant your car was Rallye. Since you got the V21 code ( black out hood ) it means your car is a real Rallye. You could get of course a buldged hood without the black out on hood. I guess the code instead could be the performance hood, which I can't recall right now which one is

It was not anymore a real performance package, but just a performance looking package, since you could get a Rallye with 318 ( which it was indeed the standard engine ).

440 was only optional on Rallyes and SEs ( SEs are WP29 on VIN )

72/73 with 340 were Rallyes by default, 74 with 360 was also a Rallye by default. These engines were just optional on Rallyes.

After 71 RTs and Bees, the 3rd desirable 3rd gen on the line up is the 72 Rallye, specially being 440 or 340. Not so much 400 and even less 318. 400 Rallyes could be Magnum or not, so a 72 Rallye with 400 Magnum could be really close to the desirable line up specially if 4 speeds.

I dont think that is 010 on the tag. Should be build date like 110, 210 310 or if its an early build could have a letter before the 10.This is what I could decode. Im assuming black interior and guessing at the build date.

For a ‘72, they must be fairly rare options.

Wish it still had the 15x7 rallys. But the vintage American Racing wheels are pretty cool too.

Haven't taken many pics yet. Did do a video of loading it up though. The 200s look like 15x8 and 15x10's. Has L6015 tires on the rear. The guy had it since 1978 and said these wheels were on it the whole time he had it. The title I got with it is from 1980. it took him two years to pay off his car loan.

Got the 440 fired up today. grin Had to stick a new battery in it, do some work on the carb and replace the ignition module that looked like it melted down the firewall. Sounds strong. Washed out the dirt from the trunk and it is very solid. I really "dislike" when people take a Mopar and paint the engine compartment black and speckle paint the trunk. What were they thinking! tsk

There you go "B 10" "BINGO". wink............ (or actually B-11, please hold your cards laugh2), November 1971 (11-71) assembly finish date so that it is known that it complied with FMVSS (Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards) that were in place on that date (month/year) when the car was completed and ready to be shipped.

It has the usual rust on the lower quarters, rear rockers, right lower fender and a few other spots. But structurally it is quite nice. It will need lower quarters and patches here and there.

I've followed these cars pretty closely for many years, is there any literature to back up the claim of a "hard driving" option or group? If so, i learned something new today!
