Easy way to remove distributor reluctor on car?

Easy way to remove distributor reluctor on car? - 04/06/09 02:10 PM

I'm changing distributor springs to tune the advance curve. Pulling the reluctor with the distributor in the car is a pain. I've always used two large screw drivers and pried up on each side but it's tough to do on a car with A/C. Is there a better way to do it?

Two screw drivers works. Sometime (if your strong enough and have kung fu grip) you can pull them off by hand. Make sure when you put it back on so that the pin is in the right slot (small block VS big block/hemi) as it will put the reluctor out of phase. There are arrows that show the direction of rotation (big block/hemi is CCW, small block is CW).

there is a puller for this(like a mini gear puller) but yes I'd use the right width/length of screwdrivers or clean the base & R&R the dist. thats why my next one will be an adjustable one

Thanks guys, I figured most everyone was using the screwdriver method but I wanted to see if anyone had come up with something clever. It's not hard to gouge the soft aluminum body or nick the reluctor if you're not careful. It's too bad Chrysler buried the springs down there like that.
I saw that there were two slots for the pin but never knew why. I just always put it back the way it was. Now I know what the other slot is for.
I've heard of an adjustable vacuum advance but not an externally adjustable mechanical one. I'd like to know more. Who makes it, where can you get it?

MSD makes a nice distributor. The mechanical ones use a GM type advance system that's right under the rotor. Not sure if there vacuum advance unit is the same.

Mallory also has a distributor that has has keys and stop arms so you can adjust the total advance and springs for the curve. They were actually making the MP ones a while back, but on those you still needed to strip everything off to get at the weights. They also had adjustable vacuum cans.

It would be really nice to be able to adjust total mechanical advance. The stock unit is really lame for that. Welding on or filing off metal is not a realistic option!

I don't understand what you're trying to accomplish, here. It takes less time to yank the dist than it does to fight with it!!!!! It can only go back in two ways, so all you have to do when you yank it out is make a quick note of the general direction the rotor points. If you are changing advance springs, you're gonna want to recheck the timing anyhow

I've used a battery clamp puller

I think that would do it

I've used that method several times too with complete success. Some battery pullers (like mine) have a pointy tip in the middle and don't give enough travel because the tip goes down into the center of the distributor shaft. A washer with a small hole and a large OD solves that.

I use a couple of paint can openers.
