440 ENGINE - 04/04/09 02:06 AM

I HAVE A 69 440 HP ENGINE ,IT HAS THE FACTORY FLAT TOP PISTONS WITH NO VALVE RELIEFS.

HOW BIG OF A CAM CAN GO WITH ?

THE ENGINE IS ALL ORIGINAL AND FRESH (STANDARD BORE)

I WAS TOLD A THE MP 509 PURPLE SHAFT WOULD RUN GOOD.
I HAVE A 906 HEAD WITH SOME WORK ,NOTHING MAJOR

THE CAR HAS A 4000 STALL AND 4.56 GEARS AND
WEIGHS ABOUT 3500

WILL THE 509 RUN GOOD WITH THIS SETUP AND WILL IT HAVE ENOUGH CLEARANCE PISTON TO VALVE .

THANKS TO ANYONE WHO CAN HELP

I think a 509 would work well with that combo, although the 456's are probably more than you need..

You DEFINATELY should double check the piston to valve clearance, and that the valve retainers don't hit the guides. It's the only way to be sure.

And ps, writing in caps is considered YELLING on discussion boards so please stop yelling at us

Sure does make it easier for some of us older folks to read though...I'm gonna have to vote for the yelling...

bill me later, Change the font size on your computer and yelling won't be necessary.

Thanks Stumpy. That seems to help but I am still having trouble hearing so let's just go back to yelling...

Yes my car in sig line. my best with it was 11.70
I'm a tenth or 2 slower than that these days, but when it ran that fast....

67 440 .030" over
10.6:1 compression, 915 heads with stock valve size(manley stainless valves) home port job. racer brown 242@50 cam 545 and 510 lift using racer brown 1.6I/1.5E combo rockers
Speedpro "six pak" slugs, eddy rpm manifold, 750 mighty demon, 410 gears, 9.5" 3400 stall.
The car was just over 3800 with me in it then.

The slow down has come from having gained a bit of weight
(switched to a dana, and added a second battery) and geared back to 373:1 from the 410.

I think a 509 would perform similiarly.

For information purposes, I was running mid 12's when the car was first assembled. Difference was stock rockers, and 452's heads(less compression and no quench) same cam, carb, stall, gears, etc..
