Hey, Any of you ever done this? I'm sure you have. Got any ideas or gotcha's for me.

Thanks.

Yeah take a couple more bolts out and the motor will be out of the way.

Sorry but you are at that point.

Yank the engine. You'll be glad you did.

I saw a Black 71 Roadrunner at the Music City Show a couple of years ago and that guy painted the engine bay with the engine still in. I couldn't believe how good it looked. See ya!

I saw the same and it would of been easier to just remove the motor.

You can do it but why?

My Charger was done with the engine still in, but would have been alot easier (and come out more complete) with the engine out of course

Being an inline made it a ton easier though I gotta say

Much better results and not much more work to just pull the motor. Actually it might even be easier beacuse you could leave a lot of the motor accessories on if you pull it. If you leave it in you would have to basically strip it bare to have room to work. Plus there's no way you could mask off everything well (k-frame, steering, etc).

Just look at your monitor from the other side

Should be real easy with a short nap roller and an extension pole. Then you can just use a trim brush to cut in later. Or maybe a mop...

What kind of motor mounts did you use to get that slant six to stand up like that?

I think it would be cool to convert a slant six car over to a hemi six. The only thing that looks like trouble would be the carburetor location and of course the carb and trans linkage. I'm sure the power difference would be significant.

BTW I'd have never guessed the engine was in the hole when that was painted. Sure looks good from here.

Thanks

It's around 3.5" longer then a slant..and uses it's own motor mounts of course, but it has been done in Oz (tight fit length-wise in a US engine bay)

Think the single carb would be ok, not sure if a six-pack setup would clear the master cylinder/booster though off hand

And yep...it was painted right there. I just pulled the booster off and pulled the intake off too (to be able to get to the firewall under/behind the carbs)

I think you got your negs flipped, you might want to look into that.

Didn't they offer that engine in a US type Dart/Valiant body down there? Or was it a 4bbl slant or something odd? Either way, I really dig the large rectangular headlights on the US type bodies.
Travis..
Edit to stay on track. Pull the engine, it looks like you are about 10 bolts from it being out anyway.

Even better drop the engine, trans, and the k frame.

I'm in the process of painting mine now, the engine bay is painted and I'm working on the k member. I'm building a new motor too so it was already out. It would've been much easier to back off the torsion bars, drop the upper a arms and unbolt the k member. This has been a pain, but hopefully it will be worth it in the end.

I have only painted an engine compartment once with the engine still in the comartment....because the guy wouldn't allow me to pull the engine. It was a pain in the A**!...
You will get a better job pulling the engine and even a better job if you pull the complete suspension. I just dissassembled a 72 Satellite last week and removed the front suspension and sandblasted and did all repairs and primed and painted the engine comartment...I will try and attach a picture...hope this helps..

Granted- pulling the engine will give you the best results. A trick I learned- is to use aluminum foil to wrap your motor and parts. It conforms to whatever you are wrapping, and does not get blown around from the air pressure. You can really wrap things tight, and have much more room to get your paint down in the nooks and crannies.

Depends ...

Are you going to fix that rot on the inner fender? If not then paint the whole thing with a brush 'cause everyone will be looking at the rot, not the paint !!
