Power steering brackets and pulleys

Power steering brackets and pulleys - 03/28/21 10:06 PM

In my pile of parts I have Saginaw, Federal, and TRW pumps, all cores except the Federal pump I just went through. As far as I recall the Federal pump came off a big block many years ago. My Saginaw and TRW pumps are probably a mixture of big block, small block, and slant.

Now for the problem. I have the funky two piece bracket setup that I thought was Federal, nope it's TRW. I also have the two-piece big block TRW bracket setup and the one-piece big block Federal bracket. The Federal bracket puts the pulley I have in line with the second pulley on the crank, BUT I'm going to be running AC. It needs to match up with the third pulley. I'd rather not have to buy more parts, but if I have to...

So, is there a different pulley that work with the Federal bracket/pump that I have? Different bracket?

If I have to go to one of the TRW pumps, how do I identify a big block pulley?

That bottom two piece bracket looks like a 66/67 c body federal pump to me. What year are we working on? I have a 69 Bee with a federal setup at the shop right now. I can take pictures of it on the car and s correct 69-71 Saginaw pump in a few hours and post it.

Here’s a federal pump on a 69 440. It’s not original. I think it’s from a 69 C body.

Here’s the correct Saginaw on a 70 b body.

Thanks. It looks like the difference in pulleys is big block and small block. Now I need to find a big block Federal pulley...

If you can't find one let me know, I should have one around here somewhere...

By the way, I believe they came in two styles, spoked and solid. The solid ones may have been smaller diameter, or maybe just looked that way. The spoked versions are thin and have a tendency of warping when you pull them.

Hmm I started to take a picture of my SB Federal pump for comparison. I’ll look at the offset and see. Look for a date code and vendor code. I make have a B.B. one that I can trade you for yours. They bend easily but can be straighten if not too bad.

Pulleys are really tough to figure out. Just remember each fit a different size shaft and saginaw are keyed. The first Federal pump use was 67 with the 318 C body, so no big block stuff yet. Saginaw pulleys do have part numbers on them in many case which helps identify application.

For your small TRW the Big block pulley is taller when on a bench flat. The gap between the body of the pump and the pulley is larger. Small block TRW pulleys ride close to the pump. Also, remember there are belt thickness issues to watch as you mix and match pulleys.

The shaft that the pulleys ride on are different sizes for the Federal and Saginaw. The Saginaw was .75, the Federal was .61.
I have several Federal pumps with solid pulleys, they are all about the same diameter. I have one though that is about 4-4 1/2", the smallest that I have ever seen. The only 3 spoke pulleys that I have are on my Saginaw pumps. I've never paid much attention to what is factory correct in terms of power steering pumps, I've just used what fit and what was available.

Beside dia difference of wheel which is a marginal issue. Width for belt and the offset of the hub are the significant issues.

After more research it appears that the pulley I have is definitely small block. So, if I knew exactly where to put a wanted ad for power steering stuff I'd do it...

I’ll look in my stash. I bet I have one. I’d probably trade you one. I’ve never pulled one off but let me look at that too.

It takes a special tool to remove the pulley. Can probably borrow it from Auto Zone.

I went to my stash to do some comparisons again. First, some folks confuse the TRW pumps as federals. The real TRW used up to 68 did have pulleys about the same small dia size. The BB versions push the pulley away from the pump as I stated early. The same for the Federal pump. SB hug the pump, BB are further out. The Federal BB pulley is 2951128 3 spoke. This was the 1969 A body 383 and also the big block C body. I did see some solid Fed BB pulleys, but I believe the were for later years and C body. Here is a picture of the Federal 2951128. It will look like the saginaw 2951203 just no key way.

The saginaw pump would have been the B and E body pump in 70-71 except for the Hemi and Trans am cars which used the federal.
