'65 column shift with '77 727 trans - 04/01/09 03:11 AM
I recently purchased a '65 belvedere with a 1977 400 and same year 727. The previous owner installled a aftermarket floor shift. I would like to convert it back to a column shift. I have a correct '65 column but my question is about the trans - do i need a different trans to do this? Is there a trans mount made for this combo ( the current is a poorly fabbed unit using the '77 mount adapted to the '65 crossmember.

I have a complete column/cables (from a parts car that is still together) from a '65 small block car which has a 904. The trans from the parts car has trunion type drive shaft.

If its a 65 auto I doubt it has B&T shaft.Only standards had them in 65.Contact Steve at Imperial services as he makes stuff for the cable trannys and has a bunch of poly mounts.My kid used one of his mounts to install the new TF in his 62 300.It was almost a perfect fit.The sb trans wont fit a BB.Rocky

I guess the main question is if i have a '65 column shift with all cables from a 904 trans will the cables work with a '77 727 trans?

They should work. The 904 to 727 valve bodies are the same and I know the 6 and 8 cable ends interchange.The only issue would be the park cable not being quite in the same place and the length of same. But that distance would be so minimal I will surely bet it will work, and I am not a gambler.

Could i get a column and cable set up from a '66 and later car? If so is there any particular one that would be best? On a budget and would like to do this as inexpensively as possible.

'66 and later don't use a cable, they have hard linkage with a crossbar between the frame and the transmission.

As said above, you need a cable trans, or a linkage column. If you have to buy specialty adapters you will probably spend more money. Although, the money may be well spent if another trans or column isn't readily available in your neck of the woods.

I had a 64 Belvedere wagon with a 400/727 from a 73 Chrysler in it. I used a steering column out of a 68 Roadrunner to convert it from buttons to column shift. It seems like I had to swap the shaft and wiring out of the 64 column into the 68 column to get it all worked out. I dug around in my box full of old linkage and found a torque shaft and linkage, and it all bolted right in with no problem. Good luck

I swapped the 273 and 904 trans in my '65 Coronet to a 496 stroker big block and a 1965 727 trans. All bolt in other than the driveshaft. The '65 904 is a ball and trunion and the '65 727 is a slip joint. The shift and park cables are the same regardless of engine trans combination.
I took the 273 and 904 and put them in a '65 Dart which originally had a slant six. Shift and park cables were exactly the same there too. The "B" body trans was a bit long, but, a shortened ball and trunnion shaft cured that.
You may be able to use a '62-'64 727 (ball and trunnion), but you will need a '65 valve body.
