Dodge truck performance woes.

Dodge truck performance woes. - 09/03/20 02:25 AM

I have an 86 Ram with a 318 and it has a lot of performance issues.

#1 - It missing a little under load despite a full tune up and a sound engine.

#2 - It seems to have the feeling a trans issues like it almost feels like it kicks down but the trans is sound and recently overhauled.

#3 - It lacks power even for an 86 2bbl.

First should I ditch the logic module/computer and go with an aftermarket carb and ignition? how did I work the lock up converter if I do? Or could I have things like the EGR opening at the wrong time or a vacuum issue?
Any help would be appreciated. The truck only has 60k on it but was sitting a while before I started driving it.

Dump the computer and retrofit an electronic ignition. You'll need a new distributor with advance mechanisms, that's about all the computer did anyway. The converter is not controlled by computer, no worries about that.

Thanks, That's what I wanted to do. I just waned to know what controlled the trans. I diffidently want to ditch the emissions system.

I just recalled those carbs were jetted insanely lean, led to burned exhaust valves. The carbon canister is failure prone, carbon pellets can enter the float bowl and are just the right size to plug the main jets. I used to use a fuel filter in the vent line to keep debris out of the carburetor.

You might have gotten a bad plug wire or possibly a spark plug, possibly the spark is jumping somewhere else instead of in the chamber under load.

I would ohm the plug wires and or look for bad spots on the insulation or boots.

I had an 88 Ramcharger. It starting running like poo poo. It was the hall effect distributor. It ran good after that, but even better when I ditched the EGR, smog pump and converter. The thing even managed 17mpg combined.

I ordered the Proform old school Mopar style ignition system. I'd love to throw an Eddy carb and intake on it next or at least an early 70's 318 carb on it.
