Trunk mat adhesive?

Trunk mat adhesive? - 05/05/20 08:53 PM

Got a piece of good jute backing that I’d like to glue to the trunk mat material. The mats come in vinyl (with a thin felt backing) or in rubber. I’d like to use the rubber for it’s durability. 3M and Dominion Seal make “trim adhesive” products that come in rattle cans, I’m just not sure what would stick to rubber. Also, would just good old contact cement brushed on work? Anybody done this? Any help much appreciated.

3m spray works great on everything. Including your fingers. laugh2 Just clean the rubber surface with some alcohol.

FYI; Back in 1978 when I bought my 'Cuda for $1000, I found moisture between the mat and the trunk floor, and the trunk floor had started to rust. I pulled it out, treated the rust and painted it. I never put a trunk mat back in there, which is why I still have my original trunk floor. Even when there's no rain, I often find moisture under them.

Same here. When I bought my Barracuda 20 years ago it didn't have a trunk mat so I bought one. A couple of weeks after putting it in the trunk I lifted a corner up and the floor was wet. That mat has been rolled up on a shelf since then.

Hmmmm... good points about the moisture in the trunk! Car has a new trunk seal so not worried about leaks and doesn’t live outside but you raise a good point. We do enjoy multi day road trips, my goal was to reduce any noise or rattles coming from stuff in the trunk. Sounds like the mat would have to come out/dry out between trips.
