MSD Pro Billet or Mallory Comp S/S 32? - 06/09/08 01:04 PM

I need to get a complete ignition system for my duster and was looking at the MSD billet and 6AL box. While browsing through my summit catalog I saw that they have a pretty good package deal on a Mallory comp SS 32 with either a hyfire 6A or 6AL box with wires and coil.

Anybody have recommendations on both of these? Really makes no difference to me as I have had a mallory unilite in the past which seemed to be a very good piece.

Let me know your opinions on both. Thanks in advance!

I run a pro billet and 6al in my 66...I like it and have had no problems. The only thing I would like to see for the pro billet is more selection in advance stop bushings, I think someone was going to market them and they might be available now but I haven't seen them. It's pretty easy to change advance springs on the billet..Not as easy for the stop bushing, but I have done it without pulling the distributor.
Not up on the mallory so this will bump it...

Pro billet and 6 al for me too. i had a unilite but bought the pro billet cause i had the 6al and wanted to stay with one or the other

Not entirely sure what you mean by stop bushings etc. So I assume there are springs you change for the rate and then the stop bushing for the amount of advance? I am guessing that I'll put my initial at 20 BTDC and 16 degrees of mechanical advance. Is that an easy one to setup with the way it ships?

Yes that's what I mean, I run the black stop bushing I think it gives 18°in the plate/mechanical...The other included bushings give you more in the plate/mechanical, I heard they were going to make a 15° bushing and some others never checked further on it. Not hard to set up, I run one medium and one light spring, they list all combinations and what the spring rate is so you can select what you want...You get the bushings and springs with the Distributor if I remember right...

The Mallory mechanical advance is infinitely adjustable from zero (locked) to 28 degrees.

I remember the unilite I had was pretty nice. It had a little plastic stick that you poked in the plate to set the total amount of mechanical advance.

I actually may lean toward the mallory unit. I guess I'll call both companies and ask a few questions. I don't want to get stuck needing to set the msd at certain static initials just because the mechanical can only be done in certain increments.

Are you referring to the comp s/s 32 having this capability?

Yes, the 32 series uses the same mechanical advance as the other series including the various Unilite versions.

Because the advance is underneath the pickup plate, it does take longer to adjust than the MSD.

I just looked up the MSD unit and it looks like a chevy distributor for a chrysler!

I guess either will do a good job. Decisions decisions..

I can't say for sure but I think the summit billet distributors are made by mallory, though I don't know which exact mallory model they are. They use the same advance mechanism (with plastic tabs used to set), cap and rotor (the rotor has a mallory logo on it), and they have the same instruction sheet as is found on mallory's sites for the YH advance mechanism. Same wire colors too

I have one on a 440 and I'm happy with it, have had it apart a couple times to change the springs and advance limit. It comes with springs and charts to choose when the advance starts and when it'll end, based on how much advance you have adjusted it for. I have mine setup with ~15 degrees advance, and have initial about 21 degrees btdc, it is all advanced by like 1900 RPM, and starts advancing at about 1200 RPM with the springs i put in it (1 brown, 1 gray).

The very first MSD distributors I saw were for Chevy and were actually Chevy point distributors modified to accept a Ford Duraspark pickup and reluctor. It kind of grew from there I guess.

I have the MSD, it's a great distribuitor. The bushing is no problem to change on my small block, in the car. A member here made me a custom bushing several years ago, I can't recall who though. As for the Mallory, I have no experience with them.
