Battery replacement

Battery replacement - 04/05/20 11:53 AM

My resto red cap battery, that has served me faithfully since 2011, has died.

I would love to get another, I have one on order, but also know that the supply of these is hit or miss at best.

So, I thought a modern Mopar branded battery probably makes the most sense for now. I have been through the Mopar battery info on the web and am getting lazy with this post versus trying to figure out the long list of current and superseded batteries and their specifications.

What modern Mopar battery is anyone using (by part number), that I can get from a dealer, and would be a suitable replacement for my red cap battery in my 69 Hemi Charger. Having the posts in the right place, dimensions that fit the tray and the cranking power to match?

Thanks

You did well with your red cap repro battery! I gave up years ago having no luck with them. I have been using group 27 MOPAR batteries with good luck for my Hemi Superbird. They don't look the part, but fit/function well. WINGNUT

Lots of options.
I've had good service from the Duralast batteries @ AutoZone and the brand @ North40, which are less expensive.
You can find adhesive-backed fake caps, battery top covers with Mopar logo & caps, and Mopar decals online, like Ebay.
That way you have the benefits of a modern sealed battery with a vintage appearance.
What I noticed on Group 24s is that they vary a little in physical size, so if you use a top cover, check the fit.
The Group 24 I found that fit best was the Duralast; sounds like you have a 27.

I saw the red cap adhesive thing on e-bay, seemed sort of clever. Have you used them, do they stay put?

I see that Duralast makes a nice battery that is slightly better than a group 27 in about the same size.

In my studies it seems like Mopar hasn't been making much use of top post batteries lately, seems like there is a unit similar to a group 24 that they still sell.

I knew my resto battery was on its way out, turning over and starting a little slower each time. Even on the trickle charger. The difference in putting another resto battery that I had in a different car was pretty dramatic. Oh well, almost 10 years on it!!

I bought the caps first, then I found the top cover that included the caps, so the top cover is my current plan.
There was a thread on the caps themselves maybe a few weeks ago, and guys seemed happy with them.

I'm not sure who makes the batteries Chrysler sells, but generally FCA doesn't really care about their old cars.
