In some cases, that was true. 440Source did have a run of rough castings that had the smaller internal passages but they have improved them since then.
One thing to make a note of: The thermostat sits higher on the aluminum housings by 5/8". This can interfere with the fitment of the A/C compressor if you are considering an aftermarket Classic Auto Air kit with the small Sanden compressor.

Combo or fitment is just a basic 1970 440 came out of an old Chrysler New Yorker. In the 70's if I remember correctly these aluminum water pump housings were 200 dollars from Direct Connection , I find them easily on ebay 78 dollars and up . The low ebay prices makes me wonder if they're are of a good decent quality

MP was the last seller that I am aware of, for USA origin B/RB water pump housings. The last place they were made was the same California facility that also cast and machined the M1 intake manifold line.
All gone now.
The older Direct Connection housings are cast pretty roughly and are a little bit thin compared to the MP pieces. I don't know where they were cast as that was before my time, but it had to have been from different tools than the last MP housings.
