Valve covers and spacers for roller rockers on 440

Valve covers and spacers for roller rockers on 440 - 10/29/19 03:52 PM

Does anyone have any experience using the Medice Manufacturing spacers with stock (OEM or AMD) valve covers, when trying to clear roller rockers (Harland Sharp in my case)? I am using Performer RPM heads.
I see so many threads about leaks, that I am concerned that this just adds to the potential. I am hoping for something that looks stock or stockish.

I can't seem to convince myself that the Edelbrock Classic Series that I have now are the look I want. I welcome opinions on how to get closer to original looking, yet clear the rockers, and not leak.

Thanks

I used the Medice Manufacturing spacers on my 340 with both the iron heads and now with the aluminum heads. I started using them because I need more space over my 1.65 rocker arms while using the original style valve covers. I also found they fixed an oil leak that I was having after trying a handful of different valve cover gaskets. These spacers moved the valve cover up enough so that the gaskets (or sealing surface) were not setting in the oil puddle at the rear of the valve cover. They also gave my old valve covers something flat to seal against. Now I can use the cheapy cork gaskets with no leaks.

I did not paint my spacers but I have thought about it to make the spacers blend in a little more with the valve cover. But with the aluminum heads it would not have made as much of a difference than it would if I was still running the old iron heads.

Fixing leaks rather than causing them is a bonus LOL. I was worried about having to double up the gaskets. My Performer RPM Heads are painted orange (with the logos shaved). If the AMD 1970 BB covers are not crap, I might have to go that route. I have only managed to find one real 70 cover yet!!! Has anyone recently installed the recent AMD's, versus the early runs, which I don't think got good reviews (unless it wasn't the 1970 version)?

Thanks

I bought two sets for my small blocks because when using the better high port intake manifolds the valve covers sat on the intake runners causing bad leaks. I just used black silicone to glue them on my heads then used baskets on top for easy removal

It may or may not be an option but, if the rockers are just hitting baffles, you may be able to clearance them. I had to do this on my big block valve covers to clear aftermarket rockers.

I simply bent and dented the baffles up and I also drilled a few small holes. The baffles still do their job; I have no issue with oil in the pcv or in the breather.

Some years back when I was making & selling the spacers, 3/16" worked for the HS rockers & Eddy and Stealth heads I was using.
I bonded the spacers to the heads with #2 Permatex & used cork gaskets under the OEM covers, no leaks anywhere.
Painted the heads, spacers, aluminum intake & water pump stuff, and especially with the Stealths, it all looked stock to 90% of people.

A few whacks with a hammer took care of spacing on my original 1970 440 valve covers LOL.

Good timing on this post, I need to do the same on my 440. I may have a set of original valve covers for sale if you are interested? Pm me if so.

Cut the baffles out and use the factory covers. 640 lift rollers on this.

iagree scope
I've also dented the baffles as well as drilled holes with a small hole saw in the baffles above the adjusters to make them not hit, lots of choices, you choose up scope
Let us know your choice and results, that will help others on here later with the same porblem thumbs wrench
