Factory distributor housing bushing install - 05/01/19 02:43 AM
I have a couple of NOS mopar dist bushings kits for sale and someone asked me how they were installed. I wasn`t really sure so I thought to ask here. I assume they are pressed in. Did they take a special tool to remove and install?

with it in a vise clamped easy with wooden blocks use a 3/8 flat punch & drive the lower one out first, tap around the circumference of it & use care then turn the housing over drive out the top bushing the same way. soak the new ones in oil for 15 minutes & use a bushing driver & drive the lower one in till flush with the housing & the top one in till it is 1.163" down from a straight edge across the top of the dist perimeter that the cap sets on. Polish the shaft lightly with some 400 grit emery or crocus cloth to remove any burrs or varnish buildup then oil the shaft & insert it & if it binds, you would need an adjustable bushing reamer used with care. set lower shaft end play to .005" & speedway mtrs has a kit of flat shims for $10 to go above the nylon collar. EDIT best would be to have your best machinist press em out expecially if it is a number matching dist.

Thanks Robert. I never changed them out myself and probably never will. I was asking for someone that inquired about the kits I have.

I would NOT suggest reaming an oilite bushing. You will likely screw up the self lubing properties.
https://oilite.com/Best-Machining-PracticesThere is a special burnishing tool you are supposed to use.
the 68 Plymouth FSM has the procedure at this
link..

When in doubt rtfm,
This oilite link says it IS okay to machine with sharp tools, just don't grind or hone, which leaves the grinding media on the I.D.
Where you gonna get the burnishing tool? Make a slightly tapered rod of the right O.D.?

You would get an adjustable (expander) reamer. The correct ID of the bushing is 0.4995" to 0.5002" & you go till the oiled shaft turns freely.
