Steel Shim Head Gaskets- Mr Gasket vs MoPar Performance - 03/16/09 06:21 PM

The MoPar performance gaskets are 140, the Mr Gaskets are 20. Why is there such a difference? Is something wrong with the Mr Gaskets? Anyone run them? Any known problems?

Someone here said the company that was making the MP gaskets stopped making them. So the laws of supply and demand come into play. I thought the Mr. Gaskets were on backorder, but if you can get a set go for it.

Some complain about the 4.370" bore on the Mr. Gasket #1135 embossed gasket.

It's been awhile since I posted, I've dug in deeper since my last post, I've learned alot more about this topic and here's the current situation as I understand it.

MP Hemi steel shim gaskets were discontinued and replaced with MLS some time ago, mostly at the request of MPs crate engine builders. There is a huge push for quality and Ray Barton/Gary Stanton are helping MP improve more than just engine assemblies. Anyway, as you can imagine there was a big price increase at the same time, nobody can sell MLS gaskets for 20 bucks without losing their shirt.

Somehow though, at the same time, the Wedge steel shim gaskets went along for the ride...the same thing happened with the Wedge steel shim gaskets even though there is no current Wedge crate engine, and no specific input from anyone about that exact product. It appears to have been two birds killed with one stone. It might have been a purchasing deal where programs were combined...I am not sure...

But I'll tell you what: MP has recieved a reasonable quote from the OEM supplier for Wedge steel shim gaskets, the tooling is still in good condition, and from the fairly high annual sales volumes of that part it appears it should have no problem returning to the product line. The plan is to reactivate the old part number and make it available again BUT this will take time, the supplier has to be issued a PO and so forth, and there are very few people around to do the work so be patient...it definitely won't happen immediately.

Another hint I can give is this....the old OEM part number for Wedge steel shim gaskets is actually still good, and a couple weeks ago I found out stock still exists in the depot system under that part number (not the performance part number). It's ancient stock, though, just so folks are aware. I can dig up the OEM number if anyone wants to buy them and see if they're still in good shape...hopefully they're just dusty but some of that stuff has sat around since the '70s so there's no telling. If the depot had a leaky roof or something like that and the stock is damaged, then they can always be sent back.

John would you educate me on this as something came up on this the other day on SB head gaskets also & I am totally in the dark on this subject. What is the problem? is the gasket bore dia too big or not big enough? & how big should it be(in relation to the bore size) so I can relate this to my SB engines.

4.370" is a little too small for a 400 block bored to 4.375" (.035" oversized) and many feel it's way too big for the smaller bore BB's like the 361, 383, 413.

I thought the bore on this gasket was much larger ???

according to summit spec page this gaskets bore is 4.450

mrg 1135

Way too big for a 383 bore, but for 20 bucks I'll deal with it when the time comes . I have one but it's at work and I'm not , I'll measure it tomorrow .

The bore size of the gasket needs to be at least as big or BIGGER than your bore size otherwise it will hang into the chamber and burn up once the engine is running in a short time .

I snagged the last set Summit had today of the Mr Gaskets -- You have to think that the vendor says OK I have a PO and a gasket order but will I be paid??? I think folks better hustle on the old stuff and stock up. They come in pretty handy when perking up an old 400 on the cheap etc. Man it is one thing after another isn't it?
