electric cooling fans 69 gtx

not sure if has been covered, but i would like to use the stock rad and electric cooling fan or fans. very limited space, depth wise. any suggestions what work and don't work? pics if any.thanks moparts

You need a control modul to run the fan which has been developed by a member.

I used the Mercedes fan and the controller in the very limited space allowed when I put a Hemi in a Dart.

It really worked well.

We were having issues with my wife's 1971 440 Six Pack Challenger running a little warm only on super hot humid days driving for extended periods of time in slow moving stop and go city traffic.

The car has a 26" radiator and I wanted to keep the factory belt driven cooling fan. There was limited space in the front of the radiator with a transmission cooler mounted there too.

I wanted a fan that wouldn't overload the car's factory electrical system.
I ended up using this 14" Maradyne curved blade fan.

I mounted it offset on the radiator using the correct relay wiring setup and a toggle switch.
You will need some type of support bracket to use with the nylon push retainers for mounting the fan.
The fan I used had multiple slots to mount supports.
I used a bolt mounted vertically in one of the bottom slots and ran it through the bottom of the radiator support then using a nut and a jamb nut on the bolt securing the fan in place.

We don't need to use the electric fan much but it's nice to know it's there and the fan does a great job of cooling the car down when it's needed.

I'm glad that pusher fan is working out for you. Using it on a part time basis when stopped or at low speeds is a good idea.

A not to others thinking about pusher fans:
Generally, pusher fans can't move enough air to keep up at highway speeds and become generators.
Before stumbling across the Mercedes fan I tried nearly every style and combination of electric fana known to man in an attempt to keep the TT440 cool. Every pusher style I tried actually increased temperatures at highway speeds. They simply blocked too much air when unpowered. If they were turned on, the engine temp climbed quicker because they simply couldn't move enough air.

Forget the "11,000,000,000 CFM!!!!!!" rating on the parts store fans. Those cheapies (and several popular expensive brands) are rated at open flow at maximum current draw. They'll move LOTS of air with no radiator in front of them. Make them work to draw air and the ratings drop horrendously.

For any electric fan to do work it is going to need a significant power supply. If the fan you're looking at draws less than 30 maps then laugh and walk away. It won't do the job of a primary cooling fan on an old iron V8.

Auto manufacturers spend billions on research to make sure their cooling packages work from -30 to 130 degrees. Often, there are several layers of heat exchangers in front of them. Retrofitting an OEM fan is by far the best way to go. Guys have had good luck with Lincoln, Viper, and other fans.
I stumbled across the Mercedes fans out of desperation. Working in a Mercedes dealer's body shop, I was exposed to the damaged fans and drug a few home to see what would fit. The W203 C-class (2003-2007) fans fit beautifully with a snip of the shroud here and there.

Find a fan like that, upgrade your charging system to handle the current (and make old car life easier in general) and you're going to be in good shape.

I've only had one person have trouble with a fan. It turned out to work a little differently internally, and needed a minor hardware change.

Since then all controllers have had the same change done, and I have yet to hear anything bad in that regard.

On my 63 I use the stock type setup and added a pusher fan in front of the rad. My stock setup works good but if stuck in traffic for about a 1/2 hr or so it creeps up to 200 which I don't like. So I have the pusher fan on a toggle switch and I can turn it on just when needed. It will bring it back to about 185 to 190 and hold it there which is ok for me. Ron
