Would a 413 in a '61 Chrysler 300 have the vin stamped on the engine and where would it be located? Trying to find out if they would have numbers matching engines like the later year cars.

no VIN on a '61 Chrysler 300G

IIRC the '61 Chrysler 300G engines were assembled at the Chrysler Marine engine plant & the top pad stampings differ from other passenger cars

so the closest you can prove or assume is '61 300G engine dated appropriately for a given car

Check out Chrysler 300 Club International. they have info on engine stampings

If the car was a factory dual four barrel 413 the upper id pad stamping will typically have a unique stamping font. If you post a clear picture we can decipher it for you.

As I recall from the '61 413 that I had the pad should be stamped R41 HP, in some order along with a date stamp. I'll bet my buddy still has the engine, but it may not be readily accessible to get a pic...

No such thing as numbers matching in 61. That didn't start till 68.

Yes, true, but there are ways to tell if the engine is the correct type for the car, and assembly date codes can indicate the likelihood (or not) that it came in that particular car.

The reason I said that is for the OPs benefit, cause these cars come on ebay and other places all the time with the statement of numbers matching, and unless the seller is the original owner, there is no way to verify it. Like Scott said, the only thing that can be done is see if it could, or might be original.

If the original owner is still alive I don't think I'd trust their memory. 58 years is a long time to forget stuff.

Just checked my G block, the R41 HP is correct on the ID Pad. That means its a G motor. Hopefully the block going in the car soon...

I was over at the engine shop the other day and they had an L350 going together. I had never seen one of them. Dual quad intake and all.

Not bad going from memory from the late 1980s...I got the 413 that I had out of a '65 Town and Country that I was given for the motor (car had rust through in the roof). Turned out to be a .030 61 HP in great shape. I tried to sell it and got a call from a guy with a '61 G with no motor. He didn't even want to bother to come look at it (I was asking $500 in the late 1980s). I wound up trading it to a buddy of mine for a core 440. It's probably still sitting in the same place in San Jose. The T&C went to the demo derby...

I had an intake for one of them back in the early '80s. I think I ended up getting $80 out of it and thought I'd hit the lottery.
