old scool air shocks, Hi Jackers - 12/17/18 07:20 PM

My uncle is wanting that old school stance on his 69 charger. I see several NOs sets on Ebay but none for a dodge other than a set for a D100.

I dont want to use a new set as every set I have dealt with leak. How close are the sets from a D100 to a Charger or mopar B body. I can modify the bushings to fit. dont care about that, and Ive got to rebuild the upper shock holes in the charger cause they are ovals.

thanks in advance

I actually found a set for a ford F150 that are within .5" of the exact length needed. Ill just but them and make them work.

That car also was just an everyday car back when Dad drove it. Its not gonna get 20000 miles put on it in a years time anymore....

Inspect that top shock cross member. I have seen many of them busted because of air shocks. It was never meant to support the weight of the car.

I wanted that same stance and got it, after a visit to the spring shop. I wouldn’t recommend air shocks.

You'd be far better off using shackles to get the stance you are after.....and you'd still be Old "Scool".

had them on 2 road runners for 20 years. never leak and no hole problems.if you know how to install them they won't leak and if you don't put them on a rusty car or a 4.200 lb charger the holes will be fine.

I suppose how much you tried to lift the rear of the car to clear tires could have a huge effect on how well the shocks or the holes they were mounted in would last. At the gas station I worked at in the early 70s, we had a guy that insisted we put 145 psi in his 150 lbs max pressure Hi-Jackers. He didn't get very long life out of either the shocks, or the mounting points (didn't much help the tires or rear quarters either). I ran mine at around 80 psi, I didn't have any issues with my rust buckets. Gene

Shackles on most will do little to nothing. Most have weak springs and shackles wont lift much if any.Saw many with springs bent under because of shackles.Rocky

Replace your leaf springs or have them re-arched or add a leaf spring helper spring. Air shocks are really the redneck way of doing it and will make his rear suspension ride like a dump truck. I wouldn't do the shackles either, I have had cars where the leaf springs bent backwards they were so weak and trying to use a longer shackle to lift doesn't help them any.

Dad had them on the car for the entire existence of the car, we dont run them to where i can stick my head in the wheel arch, we just get it a lil over the tire, get that raked look. It will be fine. Thanks for the comments though.
