Rallye Dash vs Standard Dash -E BODY Dash diff. - UPDATE - 12/15/18 11:59 PM

From my understanding there is a difference between how the Rallye Dash and Standard dash mount into the dashboard.
I think it was some kind of support bracket for the Rallye dash or something.
Can someone clarify, and if possible provide a picture with a point of reference?

Thanks

Duh, that would be helpful wouldn't it?

Never seen any difference or support bracket.

Re: Rallye Dash vs Standard Dash - Dash differences - 12/16/18 03:05 AM

I remember someone telling me when they wanted a Rallye dash instead of the standard dash it wasn't just a swap out. Some kind of support or other bracket is required.

Re: Rallye Dash vs Standard Dash - Dash differences - 12/16/18 03:24 AM

The Last one I did about 15 years ago it was just a bolt in. These was a small difference in the wiring.

Re: Rallye Dash vs Standard Dash - Dash differences - 12/16/18 03:37 AM

There's no difference in the dash frame. Non rallye to rallye dash conversion is a direct bolt in except for the wiring. The light bar is different. A standard dash has 3 bulbs, and a rallye dash has 4 bulbs. Be sure to put ALL of the screws in the switch panel. One of them provides the ground for the switch panel to the dash frame, and if you leave that particular screw out it will drive you nuts trying to figure out why the lights and wipers won't work right!

Re: Rallye Dash vs Standard Dash - Dash differences - 12/16/18 03:52 AM

Its probably the light bar your talking about. The rallye bar has one extra lamp on it.
There are differences in the instrument cluster by year. I think 70 used a cable to connect the knob to the clock and later the knob came straight out through the lens.

No bracket/support, the swap over to rallye is a bolt in, however to convert from standard to rallye you need the pod/gauge cluster, the rallye switch panel, and the rallye heater/HVAC control panel, you'll need the 4 light under dash light bar, although you could get by with the 3 light, some alteration of the harness is needed for connectors, tach wire/clock, you'll need to change the oil sender unit on the engine to the gauge style, if your doing a 70 Challenger, you'll need a 70-74 Cuda/71-74 Challenger radio bezel as well, as the 70 Challenger standard dash bezel is one year only and not compatible cosmetic wise to the rallye dash pebble/wrinkle grain grain finish...

Re: Rallye Dash vs Standard Dash -E BODY Dash differences - 12/16/18 08:44 AM

there are 4-different E-body "light bars"

3-light bars are
'70 Challenger STANDARD # 2984 166
'70 Barracuda & '71-'74 E-body STANDARD # 2984 126

4-light bars are
'70 Challenger RALLYE # 2984 081
'70 Barracuda & '71-'74 E-body RALLYE # 2984 187

8-41-41 of a Parts Catalog

a bunch of '70 Challenger "stuff" is '70 Challenger ONLY

So I checked and I have 4 lights but a standard dash.
Does that mean it was likely an original Rallye Gauge car?

Hard to tell what you have by that pic, lol. But yes if it is 4 and correct for an e-body it is a rally dash light bar.

As mentioned below there is a LOT (LOT!!!) to change and do it correctly, also not mentioned is the wiper motor, wiper arm, wiper switch, correct wiring harness (can get by without) and wiper linkage under the cowl.

Having gathered all the correct parts and restoring them I can say it is probably cheaper to buy a real r/t or 'cuda from the get go. eek I am probably 5-6k into the parts/resto costs. Having a '70 Challenger it's been extra fun getting all the specific parts for them.

I did not realize the oil sending unit was different, thanks for that tidbit!

Re: Rallye Dash vs Standard Dash -E BODY Dash diff. - UPDATE - 01/03/19 11:21 PM

The dash is a direct bolt in. Now depending on how OEM you want it you can do as little as add a wire for clock and tach and a new oil sender.

But if you want OEM the heater bezel isn’t the same. There will be a curved space on the left side of steering column that will be open. The rallye heater bezel is longer and covers the gap. I laughed a couple of weeks ago on graveyard cars He was showing off a inviolet Cuda pointing out it came with a rallye dash and you could see the gap clearly showing it was not original.

I didn’t know that when I swapped one out and instead of trying to find one and swap it out I came up with a quick fix of making a bezel cover to hide the gap. The one picture is the first one I made is painted cardboard that I made as a joke but after nobody could tell when it was installed I made the one on the car out of thin metal and painted it. If you look close you’ll see where’s it at on the raised edge of the heater bezel. It’s held on by the screw on the top right. The cardboard one was just taped on.

I'll do some further checking on the bezel, see what I find.

Thought the pic was clear enough showing 4 lights on with a Standard Dash.

not to help on the thread, but... being E bodies so nice cars and the cluster ligting makes them look so ugly!!!

what the hell were they thinking ?

( sure is a blurred pic, but still )

Re: Rallye Dash vs Standard Dash -E BODY Dash diff. - UPDATE - 01/06/19 07:31 PM

Agreed not the best set up, but easier to replace bulbs on the E-bodies than on the B-bodies behind the dash.

So here are 2 pictures.
First one is the Standard dash with the bezel on DS of steering wheel.
Second is a pic of rallye dash with the bezel on the DS of steering wheel for comparison.

So my question is , is the first bezel for standard dash or a rallye dash?

Re: Rallye Dash vs Standard Dash -E BODY Dash diff. - UPDATE - 01/06/19 08:21 PM

To me ( per what I can see ) the standard dash cluster fits just right over the bezel, not throught, so the bezel could be the same for both! I can't see any round cut on bezel to fit the speedo section, but a speedo shadow/gap over the bezel

Re: Rallye Dash vs Standard Dash -E BODY Dash diff. - UPDATE - 01/06/19 11:41 PM

The standard dash has a curved cut out for the large speedo and the rallye is straight. just for correctness the picture of the rallye gauges has the road lamp switch in the wrong location. Should be under the dash.

I think you are looking at the rear speaker fader?

I believe spkgo is referring to the pic second 70 posted of the rallye dash that has the road lamp switch in it.
Yes it was factory mounted under the dash , but probably remounted there for ease of use.

Can someone post a picture of the standard dash with a standard dash bezel? Would like to compare how the bezel looks with the dash cluster.

That piece is for standard dash, note the rounded cut out for the larger speedo.
That same piece for a rally is solid rectangular, because the rally gauges are flat in that area.

Ok... yes it seems the gap I'm looking at is an optical ilusion, being on bezel then thumbs

Many years ago it took me about three hours to put a rally Dash into my standard - 73 Challenger, with a friend helping me.. Actually it's pretty easy had to wire up the tach. And the heater control is different. And I use the factory wiring diagram that really help

Good eyes the switch is not in the usual location.Since the car was a standard dash the frame wasn't drilled for the normal location so instead of drilling the frame and knowing it wasn't going to be in the right spot anyway I put it where I thought it looked the best.
