Lighting amp draw?

Lighting amp draw? - 12/15/18 08:10 PM

Using modern led bulbs on tail lights, and marker lights if available, and upgraded modern replacement headlights. What kind of amp draw can be expected just from lighting? And who makes nice upgraded bulbs and such? Ground up build 71 demon.

You need to define upgraded modern replacement headlights

Halogen headlamps would qualify on a 71 Demon.

LED headlights for a 71 Demon show about 1.1A per bulb.
Halogen headlamps for a 71 Demon draw ~5/2.75A (high/low beam), incandescent similar.

LED bulbs generally draw a few milliamps, but that is also dependent on how bright they are. If you had a specific bulb(s) in mind post a link.

IOW, not enough info to answer your question other then to say less that original.

Specific headlights and bulbs have not been decided on yet. Just looking for a number to plug into the rest of my list of amp usage on the car. Designing a drive system for motorplate custom build and looking at how many amps my alt needs to have the ability to pump out. Say worst case scenario what would the stock lighting pull amp wise minus the dash lighting?

Stock headlights in '71 were either used 6012 or 6014 lamps.
6012s are nominall 50/40 Watts
6014s are nominally 60/50 Watts.
H6024 are generally 65/35 Watts but the GE H6024NH are 65/55 Watts
H4/HB2 type bulbs (used in seperate lamp housing) are nominally 60/55 Watts

My understanding is the nominal power draws are at 12.8 Volts (US standard)
At high voltage, lets say system is regulated to 14.2 Volts, bulb power draw will be higher than the nominals

If you want to ballpark worst case:
Say 75 Watts at 14 Volts = 5.35 amps for each lamp, or roughly 11 amps for the pair.
Circuit breaker in the A bodies was 15 amps.
