Rebuilding my 9.25 and have a dilemma - 11/20/18 12:22 AM
I swapped to new bearings, seals and after torquing the pinion nut to 210 ft/lbs, the rotating torque is 60 in/lbs. The FSM says 35 in/lb max for new bearings.
Is this going to cause problems? Or do I need to redo the crush sleeve and start over.
TIA
Ken

Are the bearings lubricated? Is the seal lubricated?
Take a brass punch and strike the pinion for and aft, and measure again.

Well I just used a drift, and got it down to 55 in/lbs.
If I run it like this will I ruin the bearings?

It will most likely be short lived. It's easier to do the crush sleeve over now rather than later after its all back together.
BTW I wouldn't recommend striking the pinion with a drift and hammer either as it can cause brinelling of the races or put flat spots on the rollers.

Ratec sells a spacer and shim kit. I used one when I redid my truck. Made life much easier.
