Full Rewiring

Full Rewiring - 11/07/18 06:19 AM

I was wondering, if I need to fully rewire my 70 Charger, what exactly do I need? There's about a million different harnesses for different parts of the car. Is it even possible to create a complete list of which harnesses I need without it being 10 pages long? Another problem I will run into is the aftermarket radio and speakers that were installed in my car before I got it. Could someone try their best to give the most complete list possible? I don't need exact parts, just what kinds of harnesses and wires are needed. Thanks

I replaced EVERY harness front to back in my 70 Charger with M&H's repro harnesses, the only used factory harness I have in the car is the power window set up that I added and a NOS factory steering column harness, and only because those items weren't available from M&H, last thing I want in any restored car is a 40-50 yr old harness(es)...

I'd recommend M&H, my Charger was retrofitted 14 yrs ago, ZERO issues with electrical to date...

Your looking at about $1500+ in harnesses from M&H to rewire the car if you go that route, with the dash being the most expensive, but the other harnesses will quickly add up, I ordered everything thru Year One, the only licensed supplier at the time...

I Know a lot of guys like the plug-n-play types, but For a lot less money and a good way to learn about your 70's systems, I used the Painless kit.

It is doable for the hobbyist and you can ensure all your connections are solid with the proper crimping tools.

Also it gives you the option of soldering ALL the high current terminals.

With their instructions and a good color MOPAR schematic, you will understand better the workings of your system.

My 2 cents....Joe

PS. It doesn't use the firewall bulkhead, has a good main fuse system
and allows a better ammeter solution.

M&H wiring - dash, rear lights, forward light wiring and engine harness best plug and play sold through Yearone, wait for their 30% off sales.

American Auto wiring - a good aftermarket if you want to upgrade, but not factory, so no bulkhead plug.

Thats what i have heard, so with the m&h harnesses, i can replace every bit of wiring (except the power window and steering column harness)? Ill give them a call tomorrow about exactly what i need, thank you very much. Also, how would i go about keeping the aftermarket radio and rear speakers (the rear speakers are enough the fronts are shot anyways)?

M&H has updated/added a lot more harness and options over the years, plus if you have a harness (in good shape) that they don't offer, and they express interest in it, they will use it as a model for reproducing one for you and future customers...

As far as the aftermarket radio/speakers, if your not comfortable wiring your own system into the factory harness, have a professional stereo shop install it...

what are you trying to accomplish with rewiring it?

Re: Full Rewiring - 11/07/18 05:49 PM

50 year old wiring is an invitation for failure or worst case a fire. Its a safety concern.

I rewired my '64 Polara with a 20 circuit aftermarket kit because I don't have the kind of money it takes to use a reproduction harness. Aftermarket kits are all high quality and you learn a lot about how your 50 year old electrical system works if you do it that way. That said, if you don't have the ability or you're doing a concourse restoration, then an expensive reproduction harness would be the way to go.

"if you don't have the ability"......

add to that, the correct tools needed for terminations. i have fixed way too many electrical problems that stem from termination problems caused by guys not using the correct tools necessary for quality crimps and plug ins. those 937 piece kits with the crimping tool for only $2.97 from elcheepistanfreight just don't cut it.

If you don't have a OEM type factory service manual, not a Motors or Chilton service manual tsk then buy one now.
Mopar is great on their FSM on all the electrical circuits and diagrams up scope
Mopar has done some mid year changes like the 1969 1/2 390 HP 440 6 pack motors with the wiring needed for the idle shut off solenoid that weren't in the original 1969 FSM for both the Dodge and Plymouth B bodies shruggy I'm not sure if you can still get copies of the update to the FSM or not for changes like that.
I have done several complete restorations on mid 1960 to early 1970 Mopar B,E and A body cars, all of the factory wiring harnesses are plug and play up
I need to let you know I worked for a telephone company for over 30 years in customer services fixing telephones and telephone lines so low voltage direct current electrical issues do not scare or mystified me.
Nothing for you to worry about either up grin

I do have a service manual actually, you can download them for free from mymopar.com. I have it on my laptop and phone, I don't believe I'd have to worry about mid year changes or anything like that. Also, if I plan on swapping the 727 to an aftermarket manual, should I get the manual harnesses?

Re: Full Rewiring - 11/10/18 05:18 AM

The tranny wiring harnesses are different for the 727 versus NP 833 so yes buy the one you need for the backup lights and if you want to use the clutch pedal safety starter circuit for your car buy the switch and wiring harness for the clutch pedal and install them at the same time up

I'm assuming that can still transfer over with a tremec t56?

I can't answer your question on that tranny, call the manufacturer or one of their vendors and ask them if it has a back up light switch in it or not scope

Ok, thank you, also, I downloaded a complete service manual, but just realized a few parts of the wiring diagrams are blacked out, is this how they are? Or is it just because it was a free downloadable version?
