4" Heavy Duty C clip impossible to get off - 10/22/18 10:47 PM

I just bought a pair of Lisle Heavy duty pliers to get the 4 inch large C clip off of a Moroso Oil Accumulator and the tips keep popping off the holes in the C clip. I have to get off both sides to replace the 4 rubber O rings. My hands hurt. lol

Is there any trick to getting this clip off.

It may be seized in the groove, did you try tapping it around to loosen?
Maybe some WD-40 too.

Definitely not seized, I am able to get it turning and pinch it to rotate it.

Whenever Ive had this problem in the past, I do spray it with a little penetrating oil, then with the c clip pliers engaged in the openings, squeeze together and hold while sliding a small pick underneath any part you can. It might wind up going flying off, so be careful.

The O rings were leaking past, so there is plenty of oil on the C Clip.

I just played around with the assortment of bits and I realized it is the angle of the bit used to keep the angle correct throughout the movement when applying pressure to the pliers.

I'm trying the bit which is 45 degree angle and does not have the baby tips. Hope this works.

Might be a two man job. Someone to squeezes clamp and someone with awl to get under it . .

I don't want to gall up the case prying under the C clip. Metal seems very delicate.
I almost had it and the bit broke. On to my next set of bits.

Tape up a screwdriver so it wont scratch it, then you will be able to get under it to help get it out. Most likely your snap ring pliers are not big enough for the job. I have a good snap on set that the ends are taper cut so they wont slide off when you take the snap ring off.

Yes, that was the hot ticket. Tapered 45 degree bits pointing inward to each other . Was able to grab it and pull without the bits coming out of the holes.

I had to do 2 outer clips and 2 inner puck clips.

Done but it was not an easy job.
Now pumped 65 psi of air into the cannister and watching to see if any air escapes.

Welcome to the club. Those are a [censored]! I took a large pair of large old vise grips and welded pins on the ends. It works well. Also really helps during reinstall.

Ok 2 days so far and holding 65 psi of air. I think I might be golden.
