Here is round 2. I moved the pinion in forward .010, trying to make the contact patch larger. Now backlash is higher, around .025. Should I move the carrier over into the pinion at this point?

What do you think my next move should be? I was going to shim the carrier to the right into the pinion gear? Not sure what it would do the the depth of the pattern into the ring gear?

Yes move toward pinion about .012-.015. Do you have some slip bearings to make your life easy? If not you can make some with a dremel and a few sanding drums, sand them out till they slip on carrier rather than pulling bearings 10 times. I found out that a dremel works after I bought a set.

No but I broke down and bought a press. At this point, buying a couple sacrificial bearings would be merciful.

I would recommend setting the pinion depth to what the gear was originally machined for. The spec will be etched on the end of the gear (on a Dana gear set). Then go for your pattern and backlash. Good luck with it.

Ya make some slip bearings, go to utube and watch carl jantz engineering dana 70 setup vidio, he made my life so much easier with slip bearings and a yoke replacement tool for setup, you get it right not close. No more pulling banging guessing hopeing....
