440 Has Whining Sound

440 Has Whining Sound - 09/22/18 11:48 PM

My old 440 with a 509 cam has been sitting about a year.
Fired it up today, it sounds just like a power steering pump low on fluid.
Sound went away a lot after it reached 180 degrees, but, still real faint in the back ground.
Oil pressure was 80 psi cold, 60 at idle hot.
There is no power steering pump on it, fired it up on test stand.
Has anyone had a noise like this before? Sounded like it was coming from upper end under the intake.

Could be many things.

Id not get too upset yet, if its set a year maybe it just needed to get heat in it.

Id try the same thing tomorrow and see what it does. Some things can a bit angry after sitting a while.

The sound starts at 2500 on up to 3500. It's weird, sounds just like a power steering pump whine.

I've been trying to think of potentials. You might pull the valve cover(s) & use your stethoscope.

I'm going to pop off the VCs and make sure pushrods are rotating, poke around with the stethoscope. Thought someone might be able to nail it from memory. Thanks for the replies.

Best thing to do after an engine has been sitting up a long time is pull the distributer and prime to oiling system. I hope it's not a cam bearing issue.

Pull the distributor and see what the drive and the cam look like.

Maybe re-torque the intake to make sure it's not sucking air there.

Id go drive it, get it warm and get at it, the problem will show if there is a problem.

A years not that long in the big picture, I used to pull cars out of fields that were there while I was in high school and I seen them from the bus, clean the tank, change oil, install battery and they all ran.

I beat them like stepchildren and then sold them running.

I had a faint whining noise once in one of my 440's that started never really seemed to effect anything. The one day it started running rough like it was on 6 cylinders. I had to drive it the 20 or so mile home. It was on 6 cylinders, spun a cam bearing & broke the cam shaft on the #4 journal. Cylinders #7 & #8 were not moving. The front 1-6 still ran fine & got me home. LOL. Cut the oil filter open & was filled of bearing material. I had to rebuild it & still going strong today.

Two things, metal to metal rubbing together, no oil. Or Sucking air, that sounds like a squeal, carb will do this too.

Any updates?

I ran the valves, everything is the same as they were set.
All the pushrods spin.
Distributor gear and bushing look normal.
Tightened the carb.
I am going to just ran it, I don't want it to be a cam bearing, but, that is the area it is coming from, even though the noise is noticeably quieter.

Well....you might try some engine flush? Maybe some "smutz" in an oil passage? If you use that stuff, follow directions EXACTLY and only idle the motor for maybe 5 min. & replace oil/filter.

I had a vacum leak off the back of my carb that gave a whine noise

Which would get quieter when warmed up a cam bearing or a vacuum leak? none, one,or possible both?
