1968 A-Body Engine and Transmission VIN's

1968 A-Body Engine and Transmission VIN's - 09/11/18 10:23 PM

I just look at a nicely restorded H code 68 Dart GTS 383 4-speed for a friend.
When checking for the VIN of the back of the block near the oil sending unit. I noticed that the numbers looked a owner stamping and not factory.
Then I realized that who ever did the stamping used the SO number from the fender tag and not the VIN from the dash.
After we put the car up on a lift, I found that the transmission pad on the passenger side that the six sequence numbers from the VIN stamped up side down on the pad.
In 1968 did the factory stamp the VIN on the pad of the 4 speed cars?

VIN should have been stamped in both spots.

Odd situation, do you have photos of both stamps?

If the block was re-stamped, that says enough about the owner for any buyer to look elsewhere.

The friend has a few pics of the stamping. I will see if I can get them sent to me so I can post them here.

Fender tags did not record an actual 'build date' - unless it was pure coincidence.

No shiite Sherlock, just want an approximation, we all know this by now... eyes Just trying to find out if it was an early or late build.

Ask the real question then?

No need to be rude or imply profanity.

That I did not get a look at, unfortunately. When on the lift I noticed that it had a 187 C-body oil pan and the casting date on the block was in Aug. 1967

Used to be a $600 hit if missing the oil pan, now that Vans Auto has reproduced them for $200 plus pick-up it is easier to swallow if you don't mind using reproduction parts. up

Taking a close look that the trans pad. I see that the assembly date is 2461 which is 4-23-68. The vehicle's SPD is 4-18-68
Does this maybe make you question if is the original transmission?

That probably just proves Barry's point that the SPD is just a suggestion. work

Yes. If that is the original transmission....

Question about the 1968 BB stripe.
Is it suppose to to be one that goes straight across the trunk lid or does it come to a point in the middle of the lid? Kind of making a slight V if you understand what I talking about.

There is a red with white interior and tail stripe 1968 Hemi 4 spd Charger out there that was done just like that Dart. It has the original numbers matching 4 speed transmission (VIN sequence which is correct) and an owner stamped block which has the SO number stamped into it which is not correct. As a couple people have already pointed out, the VIN sequence should be on both the engine and trans.
