I had a battery cut off with the thumb wheel you unscrew on my car. It was causing intermittent starting issues. I removed it and now no issues with starting. I would like a switch on it since it's not driven every day and want to make sure it's not drawing power from the battery while sitting and also so if I'm working on something, doors open, or at a show and want to make sure it's off I can without unhooking the negative cable. I was going to get one that has the battery cable that goes from the battery to the switch and switch to the ground. Not 100% sure which one I want yet (suggestions welcome), but would the small ground wire on the negative cable that goes to the inner fender be installed at the battery, first lug on the switch, second lug on the switch, or doesn't it matter?

This one is not identical to what I have...for some reason I can no longer find the one I used...
In the end it simply allows for an interior or under dash mounted toggle switch that disconnects all power...
Mines been on for more than 5 years with zero issues...

It looks like you must shut it off whenever the car is not in use. From the instructions it looks like the solenoid is activated via the switch (switched ground) so if you forget to turn it off when parked the solenoid will still put a drain the on the battery.

Positive or Negative, you must completely isolate the battery (+ or -) from the car. Whatever you use must be connected directly to the battery cable with the other side going to it original destination. Not sure what you mean by a "small" wire but keep the gauges the same as the original battery cable. Most important is that your switch be able to handle the load. Don't fall for those cheap 20 amp cutoff switches that are available and look exactly like the real high current switches.

Why not just remove the negative cable from the battery? Takes all of 20 seconds or less.

It's for a 70 Monte Carlo so I have a side post battery. Hate taking the bolt out all the time because they are more likely to strip vs a top post. I have also considered the posts that screw into the battery to make it a "top post" style. The small ground wire goes from the terminal end to the inner fender. I am thinking if I mount the cut off to metal, that should take it's place as a ground, but not sure. Negative gets grounded at the other end to the alternator bracket. how about using a stainless steel setscrew in the battery itself, then, use a stainless nut and washer to secure the cable ? you could then remove the cable as many times as you want without fear of stripping out the battery threads. just remember to use di-electric grease on the setscrew threads to prevent the stainless from galling.
