Fan Clutch

I need to extend my fan om my 69RR 440 HP closer to the radiator.it is into the shroud by only very little. needs to be at least 1/2 way into shroud from what I have been told My current fan clutch is a 070. does it make sense to add a spacer, I would have to use studs to do this, or should I get a fan clutch with a longer shaft. The engine runs at 1/2 on temp. gage, when driving but heats up to a little under 3/4 if left to idle for very long.

I would run a spacer to retain your 070" clutch. Get a 1" spacer and have it cut to meet your need if necessary that way you can put it wherever it needs to be.That is what I did with this because I did not have room for a clutch .

I run my clutch fan about 3/4" of blade width into the shroud (measured at the top) with a spacer. The front of the clutch is about 3/4" from the core.

I switched from a factory flex fan and had to get a shorter spacer to maintain the factory fan location* (1st 3/4" of blades in the shroud, measured in in advance of buying the clutch and spacer that would locate the fan correctly.

The factory flex, IIRC, was a 4 blade unit, clutched fan is a 5 blade unit. I don't know what the listing was for or the brand on the clutch. I just opened a bunch of thermals on the counter at the parts house and found one with dimensions that would work for me with a spacer they had in stock. Spacer and clutch were both off the shelf from O'Reilly's.

*Assumed factory location at any rate. My car spent it's life in AZ up until 87 or so and has a massively thick cored radiator with 3 deep 3/8" tubes installed at some point. The flex fan and spacer had Chrysler markings on them, though the radiator tanks do not.

The 070 fan clutch is about the shortest one that was offered by the factory. It's about 2-1/2" tall. Everything else out there will be taller than that.
The new Hayden HD fan clutch #2947 is 2-3/4" tall. Its a thermostatic controlled clutch.That is their shortest one offered.
I don't believe that the factory ever use spacers with fan clutches, but guess that it all right to do so.

How easy it to spin your fan with the engine off? If it free wheels some after you let go of it, then your 070 clutch is most likely the problem.

Just put a thicker fan spacer on it to move it closer to the rad. Try maybe 1 1/4" or even 1 1/2". Fan spacers come in different sizes.

I think the spacer is fine. I use one w/o issue on a PU. Just make sure the center register matches so everything stays centered.

I got the studs I needed from ACE hardware.

As said get/buy a spacer/longer bolts/confirm clearances/check clutch. Might need a faster ratio/more blades/tighter pump clearances. confirm temp with a known accurate mech gauge.
