318 4 Barrel Intake with 2 Barrel Carb?

318 4 Barrel Intake with 2 Barrel Carb? - 08/02/18 01:22 AM

Anyone ever try this. Doing top end work to my stock 81 Cordoba with a 318 (still has lean burn that works well believe it or not). The cast iron intake is so ugly and heavy, I thought I would see if anyone tried using a 4 barrel intake (looking at the 2176 performer intake from Edelbrock that has the smaller ports) and an adapter plate to adapt the factory 2 barrel to it. Not doing any hop ups on this motor now just maintenance. It's the wife's cruiser and just keeping it going for now. Just don't want to cause any issues by swapping (maybe I would lose some mid range power from what I heard). Do not want to lose the lean burn now or drop a 4 barrel on a stock 2 barrel car. I did notice that the factory intake has the back water ports blocked off. The only mods the car has is removing the smog pump and it has true duals (2 1/4) with no cats. Thanks guys!

I had a friend use a Holley 350 carb with an adapter on an old street master intake. Worked real good too

Why not convert to a LB 4bbl?

I have done it once as a band aid.
383 with a performer intake.
the holley I had on it crapped out. so I reversed that 2 to 4bbl adapter and put the 2bbl on the 4bbl intake like you sugguest.

it ran fine enough till I could get the rebuild kit in and redo the carb.

didn't see any issues doing it.
it does pick up the carb that adapter height. so if you have clearance issues, it might make it worse.

Thanks the adapter I was looking at would raise less than an inch and I think I am good there. I almost busted my back pulling the intake and I really don’t want to put that anchor back in here or pull the hood to use the crane to drop it back. I would probably run it like this for a while it would not be a band aid.

I did it a lot back in the dirt track racing days, rules required a 2bbl carb, but the 4bbl intakes flowed a little better.

In a stock configuration, your going to loose the choke, and the throttle and trans rods will both need to be modified to fit and function correctly. You might also loose the effectiveness of the lean burn carb because the air flow through the intake will change with the additional height, and the fuel temps may also be a cooler with the aluminum intake. It might not make a difference, but I'm betting it will. Maybe the carb can adjust, or be adjusted, but how will the lean burn function be effected?
Sounds like a lot of additional work and variables to save a little weight on an intake swap. Gene

Sounds like it runs well and you just want to tinker? I can respect that. HOWEVER- IMO if it runs well Id leave it. The weight loss for an alum intake will not be noticed by seat of the pants or MPG. If it were me Id take a sat afternoon and carefully degrease prep and paint the intake valve covers and whatever else can be reasonably re painted. Heck mask off the intake and paint it silver gray like aluminum. My experience with with the swap your asking about is-while not complicated you may run into clearance issues as the carb will sit higher the throttle and kick down will need tweaking ect. not deal breakers but not a take of one add the other and done deal.

Thanks for the feedback. Was unsure with the lean burn and the other adjustments. Was hoping since it was staying a 2 barrels and roughly in the same spot that the adjustments to throttle and kick down would be minimal. Maybe I will stick with what I got and prep and paint like everything else. I could put a chain on the carb studs and a piece of pipe and have a friend help lower it down to reduce the pain of reinstallation.....
