360 build opinions - 07/22/18 02:07 PM
My 1989 360 is almost ready to be installed. It’s been a trying procedure due to cracked head issues. I ended up with a set of 596 casting heads that had to have the push rod holes enlarged for hydraulic roller duty. I used a Hughes whiplash 318 cam, comp 901 springs,10 degree comp locks and retainers, new stock roller lifters. I decided to use a near new performer 318/360 intake with a street demon 750 carb. Also going with my MSD billet distributor,6A box,8.5 mm wires and blaster coil. Behind it I’ve decided to use a Boss Hog 2200-2800 converter and 3:55 sure grip. All this is in a 1987 D150 long bed truck that has been waiting 4.5 years to be resurrected!

Sounds like a pretty well thought out combo. I will only mention that if I was going to use the truck for anything other than a toy, I would probably run a little tighter converter.

I’m pretty sure this converter is more in the 2200 and lower range realistically.

I would consider ditching the performer for a performer RPM which has 340/360 sized ports.

This is kinda a run what i have build. Lots of parts have accumulated in my garage and it was either try to sell them at a loss or put them to use and sell the whole truck running.

Got any pics of how much you had to grind the heads, ive a project in the works and ive both type heads with the same on, but one set is the smaller non roller type and I can open the runners up a bit if I can grind like you did for the pushrods to clear. but if too much work I will just use the roller heads.

Ill ask my machinist. He’s a 30 year friend so he’ll let me know in detail what was done.

I was thinking that the tarantula is an old school high RPM single plane intake (it would work tho & you do have it & it is paid for).

I traded the tarantula for a 1970 340 intake.
