RB Big Block Build Recipes?

RB Big Block Build Recipes? - 06/22/18 03:45 AM

So I got a great deal on a 440 so I wanna pull the original 383 out of my car and build a mean street motor out of the 440 and drop it in. My car is 3800 lbs. Running a 26" tire, with 3.91 rear gear / 727.. Most likely going to run 906 or 452 heads. What are your recommendations on Cam and converter etc. Not looking for a full on drag motor, just something torquey to play with on the street. Thanks

What is your budget?

And along with that...... what do you already have that you plan on reusing?

Things I would probably use in that type of build:
-KB 184 pistons and the heads set up for proper quench
-performer rpm intake
-headers
-lunati voodoo 10230704 cam

Well I've got the complete 40,000 mi. running engine here now, so My thinking was add a cam and springs, seals retainers and locks reuse the headers I already have.. Also I've already got an eddy performer RPM I can put on it, and a few different carbs. I was hoping to stay around $1500 or less on Budget. Any thoughts on the Whiplash Cam that Hughes sells?

should be an 8:1 engine. the kb184 pistons with head work would be a nice bump in power when combined with intake and carb. i'm not much for big cams for pump gas drivers.

i was out riding around in this tonight. basic upgrades, low maintenance, nice driver engine. probably more than you want to do though.

edelbrock heads, icon 836 pistons, 440 source rods, engle k65 camshaft, ch28 with two 600's, tti exhaust. very reliable; did a 200 mile road trip a couple of weeks ago. got about 14.5mpg with a 3.23 gear and 28" tall tires. burns very clean; simply don't work on it,....hope I don't jinx myself (lol).

Honestly, you will not be able to make much improvement for $1500. You probably have a 250 HP motor now. Consider saving for awhile to be able to make a bigger difference.

If I was compelled to do something, it would be buy the smallest combustion chamber, low cost aftermarket aluminum head (Eddy EStreet?) and something like the Crower 271 cam. You'll probably be closer to $2000 when done, but will probably put 40+ HP in the motor. Then upgrade exhaust and induction as $ allow. You could get close to 380-390 HP and won't need to change your torque converter. twocents

probably won't need that 3.91 gear either. adding a simple ring and bearing job would be nice.

my "spare" engine has a set of hugh's '452's with kb184 pistons and a howards cam similar to the crower. haven't used it yet but I guesstimate a solid 380-400hp with mufflers and accessories hooked up. this concept would be a nice pump gas driver.

If you don't want to build it, I'd hone it, stealth heads and the performer rpm, and get a cam guy to pick you out or grind you a cam.
