Straightening a power steering pump pulley

Straightening a power steering pump pulley - 06/17/18 03:41 PM

I recently bought this Saginaw power steering pump online and when the guy shipped it he didn't put any packing material in the box. Of course, the box got thrown around during shipping and as a result the pulley got bent. I never tried straightening a pulley before so I was wondering if it is even possible to straighten the pulley straight enough or would I be better off just trying to find a replacement pulley? The pulley is the three spoke type pulley, not the solid.

Those spoked pulleys bent easy. Mount the pump in a vice and bend the pulley and spin it until it runs true. I have done this to a few pulleys over the years with no problems

Those pulleys are expensive! I'd be pissed. For that money I'd try straightening it first. Your not out anything if you can't get it straight. Can you contact the seller and get some of your money back? I assume it was straight before he shipped it? Did you get any "before shipping" pictures of it?

Yes, they are expensive. They cost more than I paid for the entire pump assembly. The pulley was straight before shipping. Like I said, the seller didn't put any packing material in the box and you know how the shipping companies handle packages. This isn't the first time I have bought something and the seller hasn't used any packing materials and the part(s) arrived damaged. You'd think it was a major expense to at the least pack the box with some balled up newspaper or something similar. The edge of the pulley actually ripped a hole in the side of the box. I did let the seller know and he did give me some money back. I guess I will try straightening it as suggested by Azzkikrcuda and see how straight I can get it. If I can't get it straight maybe I will be able to find one at the Nats.
