Tire experiences question,truck/van 235/75R15 - 06/15/18 06:06 AM

What have you guys used in a budget priced under/around $100 each tire for a light truck application? My '95 B1500 van needs tires,225/75R15 on it now but I have a set of 7 inch wide chrome factory wheels for it and want to use the 235's.I'm looking at Cooper Discoverer All season HT109 series #50502,lesser priced outlets are out of stock currently
.Summit has them at $110 ea,others sell them at $75-98 ea.Pep Boys shows a Futura Scrambler ATI and I saw some Hankook tires I liked. It is a light duty van/parts chaser any input and experience appreciated!
Thanks,RT

I have tried many different brands on my 1st gen CTD. Of all of them I like the Sumitomas best. They balance well and are the smoothest of any tire I have put on there yet. I have the Encounter H/T on the CTD and just put the Encounter A/T on the 74 Power Wagon. They are quiet and smooth.

Bought them online from Simple Tire. Fast free shipping too.

The Hankook Dynapro RF10 tires are very good, and $80 on the Walmart website. I'm not sure how you like the look of them on a van, as they have the sidewall tread look stuff. But if you go to the walmart (or tire rack, etc...) website, select truck/SUV tires and put your size in there, you'll come up with a large selection under $100.

I have a 2002 Ram 1500 van conversion high top. I put 255/70/15 on it.

I had a set of General Grabber HTS 60 on it that were decent. Lasted for about 40k. As you know these vans eat tires.

Now have a set of Yokohama Geolanders on it that I like a little better, but they were a little more expensive.

Trouble is many run P type tires on vans an light trucks.Sorry but they are passanger car tires. To get good mileage and handling etc use LT tires.Sold tires for 30 years and you get what you pay for. Also look at the tire weight.Lots of pricey tires are light. When I buy for my drivers I look at weight of tires.Rocky

Of course you are right. I like the ride the P type so I go with those. The van is used much more as a people hauler than a truck. I don't mind paying the extra money for the increased wear. Too each his own.

Ditto.

Had a set of car tires on my former B van, rode really nice but wow talk about scary when over 60 mph or a nice windy day pushing that big old box around on those soft squishy side wall tires.

Hauling people or cargo is all the same. It's weight to the chassis and tires.

Spend the extra money and put light truck tires on the van. People are a much more valuable cargo the other stuff, and the extra sidewall stiffness on a people hauler is a good safety move. Gene

But, the P tires are not what they used to be. Weight rating on those at that size is over 2400lbs per tire. As long as they are inflated properly I have had no issues.

Even stock 1500 series trucks and vans come with P tires. Just make sure the obvious that whatever goes on there is good for the application and not some performance car tire. Which isnt too likely in that size.

My former Ram 2500 2wd. I got over 100K miles out of the oem Michelin's.
I bought the truck new , so I know for a fact they were original tires

They were a good chunk more than $100 per tire. But were well worth the extra investment to me.
When I sold that truck, the tires I put on it had nearly 60,000 miles on them and they still had over half tread.

Last week I put a set of new shoes on my work truck. Had a flat and it was unrepairable, as I was putting the spare on I noticed that 4 of the 5 tires I had on the trick were from the factory. 98k miles ago. Not quite to the wear bars but close enough that a new set made sense. That's 98k miles of high speed highway (80+), caliche roads, dirt tracks, city streets, oil patch trais, etc. Same tires are on my wife's truck as well.

A but more expensive than some, but great tires all around. I don't know about snow though, not too much of that around here but this past February I was going through Flagstaff to Vegas and well, they closed the highway right after I got thru. I did put it in 4wd because steering was vague in 2wd. Other than that is went thru just fine.

General rt43
Nice tire in that price range. Look for sales or rebates.
